How does one judge the quality of a product from an online photo?

I paid less than $2.00 for the slim case on the iPhone and it's still in tact 1.5 years after purchase and has protected my phone from damage on numerous occasions.

Apple recommends not to use any cover that goes between the keyboard and screen on the retina ones.
