The first scratch on a new anything sucks, but at least it looks to be on a back corner. Won't even see it when the computer is open. So unless it will bother you enough to keep checking on it constantly, be happy it's not worse. My idiot friend fell asleep with his MBP and it slid of the couch, somehow bending the joint.. It didn't close flush, clicked when opened, and just looked funny.

Yeah thanks for making me feel better :). I guess over time I`ll learn to live with it. Kind of sucks, but thats life. Funny thing is that its not like a scratch its a strange blemish, dirt, smudge looking thing that just looks like it should come of....

That sucks!!! I know how you feel.. A kid keyed my brand new M5 when it was a week old :( :( I knew who it was but had no proof ... Cost me $3500 to have it fixed :( And, it's a black car to boot so you could see it from the moon!!!

Anyways, if nothing works, get that Kuzy cover from Amazon [ wish I had the link right now ].. It's black and will cover the blemish.

I really hope something works and gets rid of that smudge!

Goodluck!! :apple:

Your rMBP is only a consumer product, not some precious one of-a-kind artifact. And like a new car, it lost some value the minute you opened the box and booted it up for the first time. So the suggestion to sell it and buy a new rMBP is crazy unless losing $200+ dollars in the process is worth it over a ding that can barely be seen.

I'm glad that the 14-day return period has passed because returning it would be clearly unethical. The rMBP did not arrive with the ding, the ding was caused by normal wear-and-tear. BFD...

Portable computers are meant to be used, not venerated. And in the process of being used a portable computer is likely to get dirty and dinged. Unless you intend on encasing it in protective armor and handling it with white cotton gloves you should expect to see some minor wear-and-tear on the exterior.

Perusing forums like Macrumors I realize that there are a lot of people out there suffering from OAD, otherwise known as Obsessive Apple Disorder. It's symptoms include:

1. A pathological fixation on the cosmetic appearance of recently purchased Apple products.

2. Anxiety over minuscule differences in hardware specifications that are not noticeable in everyday use.

3. An obsessive need to post in Apple forums in order to discuss Apple products ad nauseam.

OAD can be treated with medication combined with psychological therapy. But there are potential drug side-effects and therapy can take awhile. The cost can be considerable if mental health coverage is not included in your health insurance.

An alternative is to simply accept that even the highly coveted rMBP is only a mass-produced consumer product, albeit a very shiny and over-priced product. The real value isn't in the product itself but what is created using the product. Because in the end a computer is only a tool, nothing more and nothing less. If your primary use of a computer is not for creative purposes it is the functional equivalent of a television set and mailbox.

I suggest to the OP and others who have OAD that you consider getting a life that does not revolve around a common consumer product. And that you try to accept that like any other consumer product your precious rMBP will accumulate dings and dirt and that one day it will wind up in the trash just like any other product.

By doing so you will discover that a lot of valuable time will become available for the truly important things in life. Of course, that requires letting go of your obsession with your digital belongings and their inherent distractions so you can actually experience life first-hand.

Good luck! (You are going to need it because OAD is tough to get over if you don't abstain from Mac forums...)

And you have Arrogant Superiority Syndrome. Sorry. I know it's a lot worse than OAD, but you can work through it.

Yeah all of what you said is true, just a bit worried of the reseller value and for right now, when I look at it that is all I see LOL and remembering that not even 24 hours ago it was clean :(

But when are you going to be selling it...2 or 3 years from now? The first scratch or ding is hard to get over, but like I said, it would have happened eventually anyways. A small scratch like that isn't going to have much of an effect on resale value in a few years. Most people don't expect a used computer to have absolutely no cosmetic damage. 24 hours ago it was clean, and now it has a small scratch. Life goes on. I'm not trying to be harsh, just honest. In the grand scheme of things, this is a very minor issue. Your computer still works perfectly, so carry on using it.

Cool battle scar

My advice is to throw it around a bit, maybe scratch it with a few different tools. Give it plenty of scars so it can stand out like a real warrior.

You right. Still will try the Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 which I`m 100% sure wont do anything, but life does go on. Just tought some one figured out how to get small scuffs from the unibody MBPs. Oh well.

If some one does know anything make sure to leave a post below or PM me.....

I'm glad I could help! It always really bums me out, the first blemish, but I just try to remember it could most likely be a lot worse. That being said, don't make it worse trying to make it better!

i don't think you should apply anything on the case with the intentions of permanently 'repairing' the scratch. Experimenting with various chemicals and glosses might do more harm than good - such as deforming the texture/color. A scratch can be accepted more readily than having a corner be non-uniform in color/texture.

Dude, none of our MBP are none scratched. They all have scratches. A little one. A big one. Or a little one that hardly seen. Everyone has scratches on their MBP only if they really look to find one well enough. 4-5 years, you will change a new one. Get over it. Nothing is stay with you forever. They are comes and gone like the money.

You should grab a tool and super polish the complete laptop, you wont see the scratch anymore and the laptop will work as a mirror :D

Seriously, is just a "scratch" not even a scratch is just a mark... Live with it, it will let you enjoy your laptop more because it is already all messed up so you dont have to put a film or a skin in it :)

You've only just got the thing. Enjoy it now and worry about re sell value down the road.

Nothing you use will make the scratch go away. Just put a case on it and forget about it. Also, a skin MIGHT make it less visible, if you don't want a case.

As much as you're going to hate this answer, it's the truth. These anodized aluminum macbook pro's are just like that. The scratches are permanent and no matter what kind of moaning or buffing, it'll never come out.

I always sell my MBP right before the next generation and take a couple hundred dollar hit and buy the newest and greatest when it comes out. This way, the wear and tear never gets to an excessive amount.

Ouch. :(

EDIT 2:

I'd be careful with products like these. You don't have any idea what kind of effect with will have on anodized aluminum. Just like how you would never polish a scratch out of matte stainless steel, end effect you get a big polished blotch, you just have to be careful with this kind of aluminum. Don't make it worse than it is.

Thanks guys for the answers. I do usually sell right before or right after new gen comes out. But I think with this one I`ll stay for few years (I always say that) I guess will have to take a little hit on this one :( oh well. I still will try the scratch x thing. Thank you all for the feedback and trying to cheer me up !!!!!:)

I don't see any pic of the scratch. In any case I don't see why someone sitting on it would scratch it.

I'd say try to sell it for as much as you possibly can and then try to buy a new one. Also make whoever scratched it pay the difference.

Pay the difference? good luck with anyone offering that. Not like the machine is broken
