Closing it down doesn't help as the leaked memory is permanently marked as "in use" and the OS doesn't want to get rid of them.

The only fix is to either restart the computer, or use Webkit Nightly, which fixed the memory leak bug along with a bunch of other things.
I'm saying your computer. But if Webkit Nightly fixed it, hopefully we can see an update from Apple soon.

Try this

You need to change the drop-down in Activity Monitor from "My processes" to "All processes" so we can see what is using up the memory.

Thank you for the input, that was extremely helpful.

Actually...That was extremely helpful. For me;) I will be purchasing my "15 rMBP soon and I've been going back and forth between 8g and 16g. Now due to that statement I will get the 16g

8GB of ram on a MBPr is like bicycle tires on a Ferrari...

Close, but no cigar.

The retina has four times the pixels to drive (compared to its common counterpart), and we can only be lucky that not all requirements are quadrupled in the retinas. So it goes along the lines of "...is like putting the engine of a rabbit into an H2"

I have to agree though, that 8 GB in a retina is not as much as 8 GB in a common...

OP, I feel your pain, but in all honesty, those figures did IMO not look too bad. You have a fast drive to use as swap, I'd not get worried until you start seeing beach balls...

RGDS,

I've been doing some poking about, and I think one could easily get away with 8Gb on a rMBP provided you weren't using virtual machines. I always have one sitting in the background using 3Gb, and sometimes have another with another 1Gb. With most things I use daily I'm pretty much on 8-9Gb used most of the time. Video work puts that up to 12Gb.

If you're not doing heavy video, and you're not using virtual machines, I'd suspect 8Gb would be plenty enough.

Remember too, that swapping out on an SSD is nothing like swapping on a HDD...

Continue to keep an eye on your page outs--I have yet to have any page outs on my stock rMBP--things may chance in the future but in the here and now, 8GB is plenty for me. I was able to get the best deal on a stock model so I took it.
