I'm looking for a very generic, basic, cheap laptop sleeve that opens from the side, so that when my laptop is in my backpack in the sleeve, I don't have to take the whole thing out just to get the sleeve off; ideally, the sleeve would remain in the backpack and the laptop would slide in and out vertically. It doesn't have to zip or close or anything. Any suggestions?

It's definitely not cheap ($49 base), but Waterfield's Sleevecase can be configured in exactly the way you describe. I just got mine this week, for use in a backpack exactly as you describe.

Fits like a glove, extremely high quality, and highly recommended. The side pocket easily fits my iPad too =)

Have a look at the thread bobr linked above too - many fine options there.
