I bought a rMBP yesterday and noticed a a small/micro hole in the aluminum case. It's near the bottom of the right palm rests and looks like it was made by a machine or something nicked it in the factory (it's the small dark spot in the attached photo). Should I be concerned? It seems like a cosmetic defect. Will Apple exchange it?

You might try buying a palmrest protector and cover up the hole. I dented the palmrest on my MBP a couple of years ago. Every time I used the machine my eyes were drawn to the dent. So I bought a Moshi palm guard and forgot about the dent. I just installed one on my rMBP and it looks great. Now I don't have to worry about scratching the palmrest with my watch.

But this laptop is brand new and had the dent/small hole right out of the box. It seems like a defect and I'm concerned it could become bigger over time, etc. What do you think?

What happens if you've been typing all night and you sweat into that hole? It's going to be ruined. Would you accept a car with a giant hole in the windscreen? Not all all. Get it replaced.

I had a few of those and sent the unit back twice, give Apple a call and have it returned if you want to try your luck with a replacement

Looks like pitting to me. Nice to see that Apple still hasn't fixed this problem that's plagued their aluminium MBPs since the beginning of time.

...What?

Go see a doctor is your sweat is eating through anodized aluminum.

It's a tiny little pit. I doubt it goes all the way through.

If it bothers you that much, ask apple to exchange it. Personally, I would just ignore it, it's barely noticeable.

I wonder if it was just an air bubble in the metal that was exposed during the machining process? If it bothers you that much try to get an exchange. It can't hurt to ask.

If that's the only problem of your mac, don't replace it. Check your screen - if it has no Image Retention (is it LG or Samsung), then live with it. There are so many more problematic laptops that this one little hole is like nothing compared to bad screen etc.

I've went through 6 rMBPs (4 of them had screen retention) and the 5th one just had a nasty scratch across the back of the rMBP. However, on all of them they've had some sort of "cosmetic defect". I guess it's just a matter of how much of it you can accept. Even this one that I have has a few but trust me you'll get over it...

For me personally I would just buy a protector for the palm rest... and while you're at it get a glass case for it.

These computers are tools not artifacts.

The person you quoted is a known troll. You are better off ignoring his trash comments.

If you bought it from Apple, you can exchange it without any problems as long as you initiate it within the return period.

When I received mine I was devastated to find a small black mark next to the trackpad.

Using a nail however I was able to scratch it off after quite a while trying. I really didn't want to return my otherwise perfect rMBP.

From the photograph yours looks like it might be something on the surface - is it definitely a hole/depression?

Put another hole on the other side exactly in the same place. It will look like they belong there. :)

thing is uve got to convince them it was their fault otherwise they say that u caused it and they wont replace it as it is only cosmetic, yet stuff can get down there so...

Paying more than 2200 for a rMBP and accepting that hole? For me, no way.

If it happens after 14 day, I will survive with it but for brand new rMBP NO WAY

Why you should have that hole? If you have chance to go Apple Store, just go.
