I still can't stand 16:9 screens (unless bigger than 17 inches) that Dell uses, 4K or not. The 16:10 on the rMBP is why I keep going back to mac. However, if Apple releases another rMBP 'update' this year with a 28nm dGPU, I'll probably looking elsewhere. My 2012 rMBP 15 is getting pretty outdated this days as it's weak CPU/GPU/8gb/512gb SSD is constraining me. The XPS 15 has 2x M2 slots so you can go 512gbX2 and of course there will be bigger SSD's soon that you can drop in. Heck, even the ram is upgradable!

Yeah, Apple are pretty much the only ones that still do 16:10 screens.

have had both of them, xps is a nice machine - had a few issues with the wifi but sorted it out with dell support. IMHO, nothing compares to the rMBP, and I'm praying they don't put the butterfly keyboard on it in June.

Very low! MacBooks are rated for 1000.

For me, the battery consideration alone erases any advantage in price that PCs typically have over MacBooks. Some others may not care about battery longevity as much though I suppose.
You can surely buy a heck of a lot of batteries with the price difference. Just saying...

Same here, I'll be buying my first Windows laptop in 10 years if Apple puts the same craptastic keyboard my wife's rMB has all for the sake of 'thinness'! The 2 generations old CPU/GPU in the current rMBP 15 is a non-starter is why my 2012 rMBP is my longest kept laptop so far. Between 2007-2012 I was upgrading almost every year as my laptops are a tax-write-off anyway. But Apple/Intel/AMD/Nvidia have done their best to keep from upgrading for 4 years lol.

I have the Dell Precision 5510, which is basically the same machine as the XPS. Fit and finish are top notch, and aside from some early BIOS issues, I've not had one problem with the machine since I got it (got it at launch). I didnt make the switch from Mac, but I did make a switch in the brand laptop - I'd always been a ThinkPad user, but the T450s and W550s that I went through last year left a lot to be desired. The Precision is perfect in every way (I dont mind the placement of the webcam, since I dont user it). I find the scaling and clarity on the screen to be sharper to my eyes than that of my 15" rMBP.

I wonder how closely battery rating correlates to actual battery life. It seems unlikely to me that Apple have sole access to battery technology of astounding longevity.

The butterfly keys are nice to type on, really good pressing feedback.
It's just the low amount of keytravel which makes people hate the new keyboard, MBP keytravel + butterfly would be a perfect combination.

I've decided to sell my retina macbook pro 15" in june and hope, that apple will finally release a redesigned model but if they don't, I'm gonna get the XPS 15.

I've read that it has some issues with the drivers, blue screen of death etc, has dell fixed this?

Can you make the trackpad work like a macbook trackpad? And by that I mean just clicking everywhere on it work like a left click and two hands on it work as right click?

Why is it slower to charge it while using the usb type c port?

Agreed, but I do expect to see them and I do expect Apple to roll out a thinner MBP

The limited time I tried them in the Apple store, I did not like it at all. Plus, there were a fair amount of reports in the Macbook forum about the keyboard failing. The plastic mechanism was failing fairly quickly. I don't know if that was resolved, or isolated incidents, or just people being hard on it. In any case, it raised a red flag for me.

I have read those reports and our rMB does have a flimsy feeling keyboard... Luckily it's my wife's Facebook machine so the keyboard doesn't get much use. Otoh the replacement for my rMBP is going to get a ton of use. That's sad that Apple didn't really test drive the keyboard for longevity. The only time you hear mbp/mba keyboards failing is when they spill coffee on it.

I never had any experience with the Dell XPS but I do have experience with Dell computers and from that experience I will never buy a Dell machine ever again. The Dell XPS that they are currently selling looks fantastic and from what little over seen of it is a great windows 10 laptop. I just won't ever t
Buy it though because of my issues before with customer service and their poor hardware in the past.

As far as Windows goes I love it. Have a windows 10 laptop that is a gaming laptop so I leave it at home and prefer it over OS X. Gaming is better on Windows and some apps I find better on Windows like Microsoft Office.

Agreed entirely. I recently got a 17" MBP with 16:10 and it's glorious.

It looks so ridiculous to see short widescreen displays that have no vertical space due to the task/menu bars, then web pages only use the center-most 30% width-wise.

The XPS 15" is a great machine though if you get past that.

Personally I don't mind 16:9. I can use either fairly easily.

Having worked for Dell until a couple of years ago, I can say that the XPS line was the upper end of the quality. Anything below the XPS is really more of a disposable commodity. Also, Dell's customer support (as of 2014) was 100% offshore and warranty support worthless. The reason I'm on a mac now is the horrible experience I had as an employee in December of 2012 with a build to order system arriving DOA and it taking another three weeks to get a replacement that also was DOA. It then took a month to get a refund. They new I was a long time employee and frankly didn't care. I moved to the mac and never looked back. When I need Windows, I can use parallels or boot to my bootcamp partition.

To be fair to Dell, While their PC division has issues, their Ultra Sharp family of monitors are excellent. I've got one and purchased one for a family member and they have performed flawlessly.

Hi,

as much of you I'm waiting for the new rMPB. Otherwise, I start to loving Windows 10 and so I'm thinking to change OS at all. For this I would only buy the Dell XPS. That's because I'm asking you:

Have you made this change? Which are the pro and contra of the Dell XPS? Would you do it again?

Thanks.

I have both a 2015 15" MBPr and a 2016 15" XPS.

Both are excellent machines. You shouldn't be disappointed by either of them.

I'm enamored with my XPS. It's the most perfect laptop right now. Speed, tech, keyboard, screen, and Windows 10 is pretty neat. I haven't even looked back since I left the OS X scene.

As for warranty, I got mine at the Microsoft store with their 2 year warranty. If I should encounter any issues I'll take it straight to them. I don't know how Dell service is, but I rather have the ability to walk into a store and have it taken care of right away.

Through my experience, Microsoft Store's customer service is amazing. I will only buy Windows laptops directly from them.

I recently moved over to Windows 10 for my primary machine and swapped iOS for Windows 10 mobile. Gutsy move, but required for work purposes.

I've been an Apple customer for roughly 8 years. The computer I swapped out for the Dell XPS 9350 was a top end 2015 MBP. The first Dell laptop I had worked perfectly, the infinity edge display was superb, the QHD display gorgeous and the build quality excellent. Within two weeks though it developed a fan problem, I couldn't boot the computer up without a bizarre alarm sound going off, no matter, I got a replacement from Dell quickly. The replacement had an incredibly weak hinge and had a lot of flex in the body. At that point, I cut my losses and got a refund. Their customer service was excellent, quality control seemed an issue with the models I had. No one I know had the issues I had however.

I bit the bullet and bought a maxed out Surface Pro 4 and I don't think I'd use anything else ever again. I enjoy using OSX, but now that I have to use Windows 10 for work, the Surface makes for a superb substitute.

+1

I recently used the new XPS 13 and loved it. I'm totally open to using Windows 10 as my primary OS (I currently use W10/OSX around 20/80) but I've been spoilt by the Apple Care experience that I cannot get myself to go back to Dell customer support (from dealing with them in the past).

If I was guaranteed that I'd have a trouble-free experience with a Dell machine I'd order an XPS 13 right now. But just the thought of calling Dell for support gives me heartburn.

You could just buy it from amazon, Ive had good experiences with them

Where I am, Amazon has a very limited selection of XPS notebooks. And still, the long term support isn't through Amazon anyhow, I'd eventually have to deal with the dreaded Dell support.

As someone who currently uses a surface pro 4 as a work machine...

Wake from sleep regularly fails - reboot losing work required
Battery life sucks
Scaling between internal and external display is hilariously broken
GPU driver regularly crashes and restarts (64 page thread on technet about it going since August 2015, still an issue despite updates)

Windows 10 on surface is a good idea in theory but after using one for the last 6 months to try and work I'm ready to bin it.

Edit : in reference to the guy gushing over it and wanting to never go back above

DELL has done the same thing, in fact the very problem i was talking about was due (in part) to defective design where both the CPU and GPU were on the same heatsink and one would throttle the other.

Difference is, Apple offered an extended repair program - and people are actually getting replacement hardware. DELL told me i was a liar when i had 30 useless brand new machines, it took 3-4 months of hassling them to do anything about it.

Not the first time either, there was the capacitor issue on the Optiplex GX260s and I'm sure a bunch of other problems but those are two i have personally had to deal with.

Look up the last time DELL offered a no cost extended repair program on faulty hardware, even for beyond the 1 year standard warranty.

edit:
oh look here, DELL also sold machines with defective GPUs

http://www.dailytech.com/Dell+HP+Lists+Reveal+Defective+NVIDIA+Mobile+GPUs/article12553.htm

DELL's "solution"? Run the fan harder so the machine is noisier. Standard warranty only - no extended warranty offered.

The fix ended up being a thick shim on the graphics but yea that was dramatic for a LONG time and Dell was to say he least unhelpful.

We still have a lot of 65xx still hanging around mostly attached to beamers and such.

This is such an apples and oranges discussion.

But I'm glad it's being done here and other threads aren't being infected.
