Then why isn't the rMBP's display also soft in that way?

I haven't tried pushing the two displays with a pen, so I don't know for sure. I edited my previous post with some sources though to back up my statement.

My guess would be that there's just no room in the rMBP's display housing for anything to flex or give since it's all sealed together.

It doesn't *flex*. It's literally soft, like liquid under a membrane. It's not a *lot* of give, but it's not protected by a hard surface. There's an extra layer in front of the glossy displays, retina or otherwise. If you don't believe me, go to an Apple store an poke an MBA or antiglare display (gently).
