I take it bootcamp comes on a little key disk thing, but what about windows, did you install it from an external hard disk, or is that not possible?

I don't own an rMBP but seeing as it has Lion then wouldn't using the Bootcamp assistant be any good?

Okay nice. For some reason I thought Windows wouldn't install via USB key (maybe because I tried with Vista some years ago).

It's the only thing I can think of using an external OD drive for.

You can install Windows from a USB key (you can use PXE (pixie) boot too on a USB key). Or just make an ISO of your install disc onto your key

I had an iso of the Win7 installer on my MBA, and the Bootcamp Assistant basically created the USB drive for me and then, once the partition was setup, booted to the USB drive for the install. I'm sure, since the rMBP is running Lion that the Bootcamp assistant should work the same way (assuming it's been updated to support the RMBP).
