I just got my rMBP yesterday (23rd), first power on to set up everything ran smoothly. I had to install an update though which required a restart, got to the log in screen after the restart then everything went black after I'd signed in, the screen was still on the though because the Apple logo was lit up. I forced a shut down and after that it turned on again and logged in smoothly. Now I've just started it up again and the same thing happened (inc. forcing shutting down then trying again). Any ideas? Should I just go and see a genius?

It's a known issue that showed up with Mountain Lion. Probably would be more known about if people shut down their computers, but most people just sleep mode it. There are few threads on it here. Here's one from Apple though:

Helpful thread thanks! Seems like enabling auto login is the easiest solution which I guess I'll have to stick with for now. Thank you! Hopeful Apple release an update which solves this properly and at least I know it isn't a problem with my new Mac

Was this fixed in 10.8.1?

I've had auto-login enabled since I updated to 10.8.1 so I can't say but I've since disabled it just to see if fixes the issue. I'll report back soon with results.

I have this issue every once in awhile too. I have "auto login" disabled. Maybe Ill try enabling it soon if it happens again. Its super annoying though.

Do you guys have passwords that you have to type to log in? Or do your computers boot to the desktop without needing a password?

This issue is not fixed in 10.8.1 and probably not in 10.8.2. The latest news is that Apple has identified the issue behind the black screen of death and is working on fixing it. It'll be available in a future update to Mountain Lion, most likely 10.8.3

I had the same issue. I found a workaround though. It fixed the problem when I chose "best for retina" in scaling options.
Since I want to use 1920x1200 I tried to enable automatic login and it worked. No black screen anymore.

My screen went black yesterday for the first time as well, Keyboard/trackpad wouldn't bring it back on but before powering down I tried closing and reopening the lid, which worked.
