im having a surprisingly hard time finding a good road trip game. I am the only one with a smart phone so it needs to be something i can run off my phone and either 'host' the game for everyone else (3 of us total) or something where we can pass the phone around.

any trivia or puzzle type game would be perfect

It sounds like you want Trivial Pursuit. 99 cents.

thanks for the suggestion, Trivial Persuit for 99 cents (the one by Electronic Arts) gets a ton of bad reviews with complaints about it crashing. It hasnt had an update in 3 years. Can you confirm it works fine with ios 7 ?

Have you tried something like Family Feud/Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune or something? Those are ones that are usually good to use for road trips of if you have multiple people.

Carcassonne is an absolutely beautiful game, a bit pricey at $9.99 but absolutely worth it in my book. You can play up to 5 people, passing the phone around. The concept is very simple but has great depth of game play and the app is just gorgeous.

I've played this a TON since buying it for my old 3G back in 2010 and I still love it.

wow i actually bought that game when i first got my phone last month, i thought for 10$ it was going to have lots of strategy and depth to it, and ended up being pretty dissapointed, especially after seeing there are expansions to add more gameplay that you also have to pay for. Maybe you can explain what im missing but aside from looking great (which it does) the game seems pretty boring. Lay your tiles, your meeple, then add up the score after everyones done.

Well, I've always found when playing against others that it has a surprising depth of strategic challenge despite the simple concept. The choice between gambling for more points by trying to build larger structures vs. deliberately messing things up for your opponents, sudden turnarounds when someone makes a really smart move, etc. You've got to give some time until you get familiar with the tiles and nuances of course, and the more players, the more fun it is.

Then again I was a fan of the original boardgame, playing it with tons and tons of tiles (and booze) in these epic nerd showdowns all over someone's kitchen table...so I guess I'm a bit biased because of the good vibes this game brings back for me. :D

Maybe you could just give it one serious shot with as many players as you can round up, if you haven't already done so. If still not fun then I guess it's just not your kind of game.

Seconded on Carcassonne. It has the best learning curve of any game from the easy base game to the pretty complex game with all the expansion packs. It's a game everyone can easily pick up from my wife to my parents to my five year old niece. It's converted my wife from hating to loving board games completely. Another game we love is Ticket to Ride. We have never played the actual tabletop versions of either.

Monopoly is also surprisingly good for multiplayer on a phone / iPad.

Cool, hope you don't end up feeling like you wasted that cash! I'm playing it all the time now, rediscovered it because of this thread. :)

Lots of classic multiplayer games out there. Checkers, Battleship, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Auto Bingo, Monopoly, Chess, Reversi / Othello. Or something like RealRacing where they can race and compare each other's lap times. Pretty any game that has a score can be played against someone else (obviously not handed back and forth).
