So next week I'm embarking on a road trip from southern California to Washington, DC. And I'm wondering if any of you who has gone on road trips across the continent before have any tips? Like, I'm wondering, are the motels you stay in along the way the types of places you'd wear flipflops into the shower in? Anything else I need/should know?

It depends where you're staying. The last time I drove cross-country (took the northern route though), I stayed almost exclusively at Motel 6...easy on the wallet, and they were all just fine. I did make reservations though...things could be more hit or miss if you just pull into a town each night and try to find a room wherever one's available.

Campgrounds are good. Sleep in the car. Pitch a tent.

Walmarts don't mind if you sleep in their parking lot, use their toilet etc.

Driving is really easy between 3 and 5 am.
