At the time of writing, macrumors report 216 robots online. I assume this is not a reference to Apple Fanboys, so what exactly does it refer to and how are they identified?

They’re referring to web crawlers. Robots basically go through pages/threads and index them, so when you search for something on Google it brings up the right result.
