Found dead at the bottom of a pool

Rodney King dead at 47

Rodney King -- the man who was at the center of the infamous Los Angeles riots -- was found dead this morning. He was 47.

According to our sources, King's fiancée found him dead at the bottom of a pool.

King became famous in 1991 when he was the victim of police brutality at the hands of the LAPD. The officers involved in the incident were acquitted the following year and the announcement of the verdict led to the Los Angeles riots.

Not exactly sad news. He's been in trouble several times for beating women and other laws. Though he wasn't a hardened criminal he was not a good man.

So its dependant on your judgement of his life then?

He appealed for calm during the riots- wasn't it something like everyone "just get along"?, while you deem fit to weigh a mans life by your perception of his worth.

Guess that wife-beating, petty criminal "not a good man" was a still bigger man than thou.

This sort of attitude actually makes the south rising again less likely, you know.

Some level of sympathy for the passing of all most any person is not a bad thing unless it's someone like Pol Pot. Honestly I'm not significantly sad for people I don't know unless it's tragic or they are celebrities. ;)

Posting this here just in case it turns PRSI-y.

CNN

Rodney King, whose beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 was caught on camera and sparked riots after the acquittal of the four officers involved, was found dead in his swimming pool Sunday, authorities and his fiancee said. He was 47.

I know it's a gossip type site, but: TMZ

Rodney King's fiancée is telling friends Rodney had been drinking all day Saturday ... and had smoked weed in the hours leading up to his death ... sources close to King tell TMZ.

According to our sources, King's fiancée, Cynthia Kelley, is telling friends King was at the house all day drinking, and he smoked marijuana at some point, before she went to bed at 2:00 AM.

Even more sad if he died because he was drunk and/or high at the time.

Why would that make it more sad? At least he didn't die cause he was a 47 year old man who owned property with a pool and didn't know how to swim. That would be sad.

He had a long-standing history of drug abuse. It is sad though because he has a special place in history as far as the LAPD goes and I think he could have done a bit more with life.

Just a personal opinion, but if you can't say something constructive on an obit thread like this one, consider saying nothing.

Perhaps a tiny bit of humanity is in order...
Wasn't the guy basically a thug?

Yes he was beaten by the cops but why was he being arrested in the first place?

"The surprising thing isn't that he is dead at 47; the surprising thing is that he had a pool."

My issue here was neither to defend nor condemn Rodney King.

It was to express my opinion regarding propriety in posting on an obit thread.

(Yes, yes...on my high horse, etc.)

so because you are being arrested you deserve to be beaten by the police???

YouTube: video

very sad, early deaths are shocking things.. it hard to revere a man who lived the sort of lifestyle that RK was supposed to have.. but that bit of footage was a pivotal moment,...

compare this with the way a london police officer allegedly attacked and killed ian tomlinson,.. the officer is currently on trial for the alleged assault....

hopefully smartphones with video recording capabilities and whatever tech comes next will make it more difficult for those that have power to abuse it..

Why was he being arrested and did he resist.

Was he arrested for no good reason or did he commit a crime.

If he did nothing wrong then yes he did not deserve it. If he was arrested and went quietly no he didn't deserve it. If he was arrested and put up a fight then was he beaten wrongly?
