I signed up for it and I will stream songs only, as I remembered that what I hate about Apple Music is how it removes your existing songs if you want to be able to download any of theirs to your device.

I have tons of rare electronic music tracks and DJ mixes that will just disappear. Apparently, I could upload them to iCloud Music Library and redownload them to my phone, but uggh. When I tried it a few tears ago it was a mess. What a convoluted way of doing things.

I should be able to just save Apple Music songs to my phone alongside what’s already there, especially since I’m only using this device for it.

Yep, and they actually used to be much worse! There’s basically only 3 carriers with national coverage here (although they each own flanker brands) and they price fix.

I recently scored a 20 GB plan (includes unlimited nationwide talk and text) for $55/month and that is considered a stellar deal here.

Can I ask where you got such a great deal? I need to switch.

Bell offered it to me in an email to win me back. You basically need to switch carriers to get the best deal. I've been switching back and forth between Telus/Koodo and Bell for the last few years and the offers each makes to get me back as a customer have been getting better all the time. Over the last couple years I've gone from 10 GB for $65 (Bell) to 12 GB for $60 (Koodo) to 20 GB for $55 (Bell, also technically an unlimited plan, but it throttles after 20 GB). I can't wait to see what Telus offers to get me back - I've heard rumours of offers of 25 GB for $45/month but I haven't seen that one yet.

Who are you with now? If you check Mobilesyrup.com they usually post the win back offers.

Hey thanks! I'll do that. I'm with Rogers now for my iPhone and Bell for my iPad. I'll keep an eye out on mobilesyrup for these deals as you suggested. (Probably I"ll get rid of my iPad plan altogether - not seeing much need or use for it. Worse case scenario: just hotspot it through the iPhone, especially if the data plan is decent)

Wow, are those normal prices for Canada wireless plans? Seems exorbitantly high!

Been 10 years here and as a now Canadian citizen, yes, it’s high. I have close family in the US and the pay about $25 with infinite everything and can call and roam Mexico, US and Canada.

Good luck with the roaming fees here, last year I spent 3 weeks in the US visiting and got hit (knowingly) with a $5 a day “roam like home” fee. It has a cap of an up to 12 days for a bill cycle, but it resets anyways on the bills day, so I got the hit almost twice of those 12 days.

But I find it to be the case for a lot of things, McDonald’s for starters, is more expensive. The taxes are incredibly higher by a lot both sales taxes (15%) and income tax. Buy an high end iMac and see $600 of tax added at the end, that’s like a mid-high iPad or some couple of consoles.
Salaries in general are considerably less than an equivalent position in the US.
The main allure for me at the time was that to find a qualified job and get out from a death end third world country was a lot easier and welcoming here than in the US, but make no mistake, the almost yearly visit I pay to Texas, with even with all the complains people have against that country, I get reminded how much more advanced, economically solid and overall a much efficient lifestyle life is there.

PS: By “efficient” I mean, in a single 2hr afternoon block I can drop by a friend’s job, go to Costco, go to Best Buy, go to a Bank and quickly do whatever I had to do with an advisor, etc. Here going to Costco is probably the single activity I’ll do for an specific date.
Yep, and the Triopoly of carriers will say it's because our population density is so low.

In reality almost all of Canada's population is in a very small number of urban centres.

Our population density per tower is probably WAAAAAY higher than in the US.
I live in Montreal and have family in Texas and North Carolina, at least in those specific examples (i.e not California nor New York) the latter feels like ghost towns full of neat highway roads and malls in comparison.

Wow....very little in the big picture of what needs and should be done. They have been very ineffective. But if they think everyone is so easily pleased and placated as you they don't have to do anything else. They stopped 3 year contracts but then they just sat back while the telcos made 2 year contracts in their favour to make up for any losses.

No disrespect, but if you feel they are doing what consumers need then you are part of the problem, not the solution.
I’m here with an ISP called “TekSavvy”, we often receive progress and updates like this:

A couple of excerpts:
“However, the large carriers petitioned Cabinet to overturn the CRTC’s decision and impose higher rates. Over 150,000 Canadians voiced their support for the CRTC’s decision and urged Cabinet to support lower Internet and cell phone bills.”

“Ultimately, in announcing Cabinet’s verdict on the petitions, Cabinet caved to pressure from the large carriers, who threatened to hold back investments in rural Canada unless they were protected from competition.”
