I have a Roku--a couple of years old now. Bought it mostly for Amazon VOD but I really like the Apple TV a lot better. I have a first gen ATV and it still works great and more importantly, I am able to update it with the latest software unlike my outdated Roku--that is important to me so I will continue to use my ATV as my primary streaming device.

The Roku 3 supports wired ethernet. Are you talking about a price point difference?

The Roku 3 only supports HDMI. The old Roku 2 supported HDMI and composite video. It also had wired and wireless connectivity. The new Roku 2 supports HDMI and composite video but it only has wireless connectivity. In my opinion, the old Roku 2 was better then the new Roku 2.

I think the old Roku 2 was a better deal since it also supported wired ethernet.

It did? You sure? I think ethernet was always only on the $99 models.

Oh, you mean the 2XS, the predecessor to the 3. Yeah, that makes sense. But the new 2 is the successor to the 2XD or whatever, it was never as good as the $99 models.

I just bought the Roku 2XD for my mother 4 days ago, so of course a new one gets announced =P

We're using it so she can stream from my PLEX server without having to hookup her laptop or whatnot to the TV.

It's incredibly convenient with its small size and remote and built-in wireless and whatnot, but holy friggin crap is the PLEX app a hot mess.

But I hear it's some type of Roku SDK issue, so hopefully that improves.

Erm, wrong, the first gen Apple TV was the one with a hard disk and it has been years since the last software update!

My smart tv has replaced these devices. The only thing I would be interested in is the remote headphone jack. Does the roku allow you to stream movies from a computer running server software?

I just bought an LG Smart TV and it has almost all the apps that Roku has with the main exception being HBO Go.

I wonder if the new Roku 1 would be worth it just to get HBO Go... hm.

Yes it does. I run the Plex app off my Roku 3 and a Plex Server on my ReadyNAS. to stream movies.

When you think about it, you save enough money in the course of a couple months without cable to just own both Apple TV and Roku.

I prefer the Apple TV interface (especially with the bluetooth keyboard I have paired with it), Airplay and its ability to stream anything I have in iTunes on my Mac. The Roku does have a better selection of channels, though, so I keep an old one around mainly for Amazon rentals plus a few other niche things.

And neither will play divx files. Feh. I'll stick with my Boxee Box until either Roku or ATV becomes useful.

I haven't updated my Apple TV2 in about a year. My one gripe (does it still exist?) is that you can't "Search" for titles. You have to scroll. Meaning - I have over 700 movies in my collection. Scrolling is a pain. Can you search now?

I don't believe you can —*but if you have a keyboard paired, you can navigate to your list of movies and then type the first letter of what you're looking for. It doesn't get you all the way there, but a lot closer.

I'm not 100% sure whether ATV will work with non-Apple bluetooth keyboards, by the way.

I find the lack of search a silly oversight for several iterations of the software. Don't most people?

I never come across those anymore anyway — but if I did, I'd just transcode them. I'm quite fond of iVI by the way, which will convert, tag, and export your file right to iTunes.

You mean search within the library of stuff you're streaming from iTunes. Yeah, it's a silly oversight, but I guess I don't have enough video to make it a problem for me. 90% of the time, I'm in Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Vimeo, etc, which all have their own search functions.

What I've really always wanted is a "meta queue" — a single place in the interface where you could search for and queue up content regardless of which of those channels it's on. I'd like to be able to go to ONE place in the ATV interface (or Roku's for that matter) and type "Daily Show" or "Big Lebowski" and have my viewing options come up without having to rummage through all those separate channels.

This is something that seems more likely for Roku than AppleTV. Only because AppleTV isn't going to "encourage" people to option for something other than iTunes. (My opinion). Whereas Roku is all about providing the user with whatever content they want.
