Is there an easy way to refer to a file at the root folder of the server, that my site is hosted on ? or is it best to type the full URL in ?

if you mean by now to link to a file at the public root, you can use:

    <a href="/file.html">Link</a>

/ takes you to public root dir, I wouldn't use absolute URL's for a few reasons. One being if you ever change domain names, 2 if you ever plan on using an SSL cert, they don't like abs. paths.
