On the other hand, I don't particularly understand the hatred towards them either

I can only speak for myself, but I don't see why someone automatically gets treated like royalty just without having done anything worthwhile yet. Whereas simple folk, like myself, toil endlessly to make our little corner of the world a better place. Where's OUR recognition? No one gives a rats derriere about us.

But I'm a firm believer in "If you want to be treated as someone great, DO something great." Slay a fire breathing dragon, pee through a dozen mattresses. Being born ain't a great feat. Billions of people have done the same thing. Royalty...pphffbbbbtt.

I have to say, I'm generally against the slaying dragons, they are getting rare now. What with all the slaying.

The crown estate isn't owned by the royal family and never has been

The real estate that comprises the Crown Estates indisputably WAS at one time the personal property of the British Sovereign. Hence the name.....

One can certainly argue that, over the course of the past 250-odd years the value of one particular family's real estate holding might have been diminished due to bad investments, Death Duties, taxes, etc. But on the other hand, another British family who had comparable real estate holdings (the Grosvenors) are presently the wealthiest British-born people in the world. The current Duke of Westminster is worth about £7.8 billion, largely based on his family's holdings in Mayfair and Belgravia.

There may be a certain amount of resentment in Britain. But if there is, its is misplaced. The British Taxpayer actually gets a pretty good deal from Elizabeth II & Co.

In addition to the billions of pounds in tourist revenue Britain gets courtesy of having the Royal Family, there is also the financial windfall the Exchequer gets courtesy of the Crown Estate.

All those fancy department stores up and down Picadilly? At one time that land (plus a few thousand acres of other prime British property) was owned personally by the British Sovereign. But good old King George III (the mad one, who lost the American Colonies) ran a little short of cash in the late 18th century. So he made a deal with Parliament, swapping all that property in exchange for an annual payment (known as the Civil List) to keep the family in style.

In fiscal 2012 the Crown Estate had revenues (paid into the general tax fund) of approximately £250 million. The Civil List (ie. the money paid to the Queen and her family) was comfortably under £10 million. Even allowing for the other expenses of keeping the Monarchy (ie. police, security, etc.) - the British taxpayer still comes out way ahead.
New grandparents Charles and Camilla were in the area today, visiting the town where I was born. Camilla popped into a chippie near Ma and Pa Cake's house for dinner, and is reported to have had an haddock and chips – unsurprisingly, she didn't pay for it.

A look on the chip shop's website shows us that this meal would have cost £3.65, assuming that she went for a mini haddock and not a larger fish. We can therefore categorically prove that our local economy is out of pocket thanks to the sponging of the Royal Family.

Had she not declined the offer of scraps on her chips I'd be actively encouraging overthrowing the Crown this evening.

Royal baby is named George Alexander Louis.

Luckily, unlike the wedding, this one has been pretty easy for me to avoid. Maybe it's just because I watch TV less these days?
