Inductees: Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G. and T.Rex.

Nominated but not being inducted: Pat Benatar, Judas Priest, Kraftwerk, Dave Matthews Band, MC5, Motorhead, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren, Soundgarden and Thin Lizzy

I actually prefer the second list to the first.

You and me both... those last two, good lord. Not for the music, but given the history of say, Judas Priest or Pat Benatar or Chaka Khan... ugh. What a joke.

A lot of people are complaining about Whitney but if Madonna and Janet can get in then surely Whitney should be there.

I don't have an issue with Whitney, because the other two are in. But they also have the longevity, the back catalog, and this early in the morning, I am trying to find the right words on how to describe what they have and what they have done for the industry as a whole.

I'm disappointed - once again - by this year's winners.

My votes would have been Pat Benatar, The Doobie Brothers, Motorhead, Todd Rundgren, and Thin Lizzy. If there were a Hall of Pretty Good, I'd throw in Dave Matthews Band, Depeche Mode, and Soundgarden. Judas Priest gets in but not before Iron Maiden.

If you're going to have a "musician" hall of fame (not capitalized) to honor worthy artists from other genres, I'd vote for Whitney Houston.

Honestly how many hits did T.Rex have? Even B.I.G. died way too soon. Sure he had an impact but did he have a long enough career?

If NIN gets in, Soundgarden has to as well.

Seems like a very loose definition of “rock ‘n’ roll” to me.
Rock and roll has been broadened to include all popular music. If you take it back to it's roots it would be mainly Blues.

I have no reason to doubt you. It just seems to me that a rebranding of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame to Popular Music Hall of Fame would be in order, with maybe subsets for Crooners, Belters, Rappers, R and B artists, etc. whoever it is who runs this has painted themselves into a corner. When a single term becomes so all-encompassing, it loses all meaning.

Once Micheal Jackson got in it opened pandoras box.

That is my big question... He wasn't around long enough or had that big of impact on that genre of music.

If Soundgarden deserves to be in then so does Alice in Chains. They haven’t even been nominated yet. Also how do Bon Jovi and Def Leppard get in but not Mötley Crüe?

I would argue pretty much all popular music comes from classical or jazz but I suppose blues should be thrown in there. And some argue blues came before jazz.

Before Michael artists like The Coasters,Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Supremes, The Drifters, The Platters, The Shirelles, Lloyd Price, The Moonglows were inducted. Are any of them rock and roll? Honestly they should just change the name to the Popular Music Hall of Fame. Note I said Popular. Of course if they did that then they’d have to add a lot of country music artists. Outside of Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson there aren’t many country artists in the RRHOF.

If you look at the first 10 people inducted it's not what we think of as Rock.

Yup... And all of them are deserving, especially those who are some of the very first to be inducted into. Long careers, great artists through and through... not to mention what they did for the industry as a whole.

However, at this point, I feel they should look to either change the name or maybe start adding in sub-categories as there is a lot of folks who are in, who don't fall under the category of "rock n roll", and that is a very broad and often times loose category of music in and of itself.

It’s clear that rock came from late 40s-early 50s rhythm and blues. As Muddy Waters said, “The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock And Roll.” That doesn’t mean that the Notorious B.I.G. sang rock. If this what the RRHF has come to, maybe they should just shutter their doors.

Or maybe just call it the music hall of fame and have a few categories of music... so you would have a Hip Hop, Rock, etc...

Agreed that the second list is better than the first. I could support NIN getting in though.

Which is something THEY want to avoid.

Setting purity tests, opens up economic popularity contests I think they would like to avoid.

Genres tend to rise & fall, the HoF is looking to maintain importance no matter what's in vogue.

I think it started as the Rock & Roll HoF for the name recognition, but they want importance of being musically relevant across a few genres.
