Hmmm…Aira's website hasn't been scrubbed, and is still up, for now…

Will be interesting to see if it remains that way. 🙂

Yes, other than the head of hardware calling it dead.

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,” said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in an emailed statement today.

Of course you can throw out some opinion, but the dude in charge literally said they cancelled the project.
If your definition of AirPower includes being able to charge three devices including the Watch, then yes, it’s been cancelled...

This is dead.
All the copycats and alteratives have saturated the market and if you have a charging matt, you won't' want to buy another so Apple has lost the customer base already

Qi charging sucks. It's slow, wasteful, makes your phone burning hot, bad for your battery, and potentially dangerous.
But it's cool. Nobody cares about the downsides like using twice as much electricity to provide the same amount of charging.

It depends how Apple implements this, the unique ‘rumored’ contributor to the Airpower was that you were able to set the device anywhere with the overlapping charging coils without having to have ‘direct placement’ like these other charging mats require. If Apple can still implement something in that range, I think it would be appealing to those who actually understand the technology, coupled With the appropriate marketing.

I am, but I meant enough with this AirPower thing. I bought a $30 wireless charger from Amazon that charges my watch, AirPods and iPhone. Why is everyone still waiting on Apple!
i've tried those. they require alignment. annoying when you go to sleep and wake up with a dead battery because you didn't properly drop it in place.

Tim Cook is not a visionary leader. It is so bad that the talented employees from Apple are leaving.

It was probably going to be too expensive and that’s why Apple cancelled it. In the meantime, they discovered people will still pay stupid amounts of money on questionable tech related stuff, e.g. a wall mount, some wheels and a magical keyboard and Tim said “back on!”

I love technology!

First it was too difficult to deal with the arduous task of plugging a cable into a phone. Thank goodness we got wireless charging pads to solve that problem.

But then the act of placing the phone correctly on the pad proved to be too difficult. So now we're getting larger, more expensive pads so you can place the phone anywhere on the pad!

Hooray! :p

But seriously it sounds pretty cool. I'm just trying to lighten the mood around here.

My only question is if they can get lay-flat Apple Watch charging to work. Other companies have made large pads with multiple coils... but they still use the puck to charge the Watch.

If their goal is to remove all the ports from the iPhone either they'll ship a phone without a way to charge it out of the box, or they'll bundle a Qi charger. No need to ship something like AirPower, a simple Qi charger supporting one device would be really easy to build.

The Qi charger is slow and your device can't be used while charging. Apple should be innovating a true wireless charging over the Air instead of removing the port and forced to use with inductive charging method.

Straw-clutching over vaporware.

Apple would be infinitely better served by moving on, as would customers STILL holding out for this unnecessary and commercially obsolete product.

Good to know that there’s something to look forward to after all this corona awfulness!

I can see a huge market for this as almost any device charges wireless now.

why not go the other way, make a big device which acts as HomeKit hub and WiFi extender too?!
No need for a super small solution here.

Back from the dead so it can die again ? Apple missed the boat, regardless that their reasons to pull out were legitimate - unless they can up-one the ****** Qi standard that became ubiquitous because there's nothing else, but the bar is high.

There will always be in a place in my house for another Apple product. :)

I definitely think we will be living a ‘port-less world’ where wires will be unnecessary with the iPhone in the future, but when that timeframe is, probably not for a while. So that’s why I think the importance of a device like this will exist in its future, because I’m sure it is something Apple envisions in terms of eliminating wires. And then eventually, we can look at something like short range/long range wireless charging with companies like Energous Corp. [Which I seriously am excited for.]

Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in

There aren't many options out there doing what Airpower was set out to do. All the copycats don't have the same functionality.

Aw man, this brings back memories. Energous has been promising this forever. They are working with Dialog Semi to try to make this viable. So if it ever does become mass production consumer viable it's probably going to be in Apple's solution considering Apple's relationship with Dialog.

It doesn't surprise me they continue to work on it.

Does anyone think Apple would have made a wireless charging case WITHOUT AirPower?

The new smaller mat won't have AW charging imo. If it does it will be in a format similar to Nomad's Base Station AW Edition... separate from the pad. I've always thought AP failed because Apple tried to include the proprietary AW charging with standard Qi - causing the rumored heat and interference issues. Place anywhere is a solved issue. You can buy place anywhere mats now. I think Apple had that solved a long time ago. Mixing in the AW proprietary charging was the spanner in the works imo.

Because there is still nothing like this out there where you can place it anywhere and it charges...so yeah others can charge but not like this

This is wrong. Place anywhere mats are already on the market. Nomad's, Zen's What AirPower wanted to do was include the ability to charge the AW on the same mat. That's what no one has been able to do. As I said above, I don't think the smaller mat (if it comes to market) will include AW charging.
