According to a post on Weibo by the account "UnclePan," who has shared accurate information in the past,
wow, now we are going to listen to every source we can possibly find ...
IF true, think about it, it for "athletes" and "rugged" - so leather and metal bands are a no no to begin with, or does anyone wear their leather band for a workout???
it'll be really interesting to see what Apples new lineup will look like, rumors about no Ti or "edition" and such ... I can happily wait another 10 days

The ONLY reason some here want a circular design is because Apple doesn’t offer one and it gives them a reason to throw rocks at Apple.
Honesty, I still love the look of that classic watch shape and would love to see apple make it awesome.

But I also believe apple’s design aesthetics and watchOS approach don’t really make room for that option 😕

Doesn't it feel like the term "Pro" is over used for products that have no business being labeled "Professional"? Like it makes sense for a laptop with a bigger screen + stronger specs for someone that uses it for business, versus a smaller + less powerful machine for someone using it more casually or for school. Like what's so professional about a watch or a phone? It feels like the term "Pro" is being diluted here. Would probably make more sense to just call it "Sport" or something, that better reflects its ruggedness and design for more active users.
Who cares, it’s just a name, it’s marketing

See this is why I am confused here. Now it is back to not being a major change. But 99% of the complaints in the other Pro thread were about how "hilariously gigantic" this watch will be. Which is it? Major change or minor change?
Hard to tell if opening the CAD drawings and scaling it by 1.14285 to release a new Watch is a major or minor change.

The Weibo post says COMPATIBLE, not INCOMPATIBLE. New bands will be a bit wider but old bands will still be compatible.

Thank you for the clarification. That has been the case before, once or twice. I still have bands I bought for my Series 0 that work fine with my Series 5 (and would also work in a Series 7), despite the Watch sizes changing a bit.

I have used the same band that came with my Watch Series 3. Never saw the interest in buying different bands. Since this is a new SKU though, I probably will wait until the 3rd generation before I upgrade, which pushes that purchase out to 2024.

Oh well, I'm still buying. No one could expect Apple to support the same bands forever.

Anyone want a bunch of bands I've collected over the years?
I just bought the Apple Watch 7 since I’ve been wanting one for a long time and the green ones are hella marked down at Costco cuz Apple told everyone to get rid of them! I got mine for 275 before taxes and AppleCare. I’ll take your bands?

This would honestly be a very dumb idea for whoever came up with it; likely more will not now upgrade than would if the new design retrofit the bands, especially those who have spent thousands of dollars on perfectly good, usable bands.
Thousand on bands? You wear a different one each day of the year and two for Leap years?

I've found the 5 buck knock-offs band online to be of almost equal quality to the 50 dollar apple versions, so I'm not going to get too sleepless or outraged.
I experienced quite the opposite: Bargain basement bands can’t stand normal wear and tear (including sweat) for more than a few weeks (at least, if you wear ‘em continuously).

You may argue that you‘d simply buy another band then and are still cheaper. That may be, though I wouldn’t want to buy me a dozen to replace them every other month.

And - more importantly - I’d rather save myself the unknown ingredients of the chemical cocktail in the low-end knock-offs.
