Whatever it is, this is probably Apple's last chance to show a serious commitment to professionals. That means more than just a capable machine. If this is serious, they'll need a "back to the pro" event that pushes major updates to all their Pro software and peripherals, updates to the MBP and a real pro desktop that addresses modern needs. Surely they realize the trickle down of pro users in the ecosystem. Last chance to hold on to their top tier.

Eh, with a hackintosh Mac Pro look alike at least you can overclock it, right?

You can overclock the Mac Pro with a software tool called ZDNet Clock. I guess you could modify the hardware if you really wanted, but it's pointless to overclock beyond what overclocking comes built in (example being Intel processors with TurboBoost). Why sacrifice reliability for a little extra speed?

Pro means people that want to get in the guts, buy the fastest upgrades, and make their workflow the fastest and best possible. Hopefully Apple remembers this during the design phase and delivers a truly pro machine that blows the door of possibility open, redefining how powerful a modern desktop computer can be.

Let's see it Apple!

I guess there is nothing wrong to dream.
I hope some people do not get their hopes up too much by your fanciful dream. Evidently this is the least focus of their current target market.
If I proven wrong, I will be glad to apologize for this statement. I have been let down too many times for too long. And I think I am beginning to see reality.

This is so bang on, imho. I've said that the 'halo effect' of Apple products in an office or home use is huge. Buy a Pro, buy the iPad, iPhone, AppleTV, software, airports etc..etc...

Might not follow suit for everyone, but I know that's how I started. I've spent a ton on Apple hardware and software, but it's all worked out for me and everything is paid for and I truly believe I'm experienced far less 'down time' from technical issues.

I really hope their new box, whatever it may be, is fantastic.

and then the fight begins with my business partner/wife to upgrade :)

You have numbers to back this up? I didn't think so. "Most People"?

There are plenty of numbers when talking about the "speed" of a computer. Mac Pros don't make sense if all you're looking for is power.

----------

It is definitely more powerful but it wasn't much cheaper than my 12 core Mac Pro. But that is mainly because I need a professional GPU, not some crap 5870 gaming graphics card in my workstation.

You can't put professional GPUs in a Mac Pro? I've seen some nice ones on the right on this forum. Also, can you put any regular GPU in a Mac Pro or only "made for Mac" ones?

You have to understand. Apple has been beating their heads on catering to the pros market - they almost went bankrupt. Apple has finally realized that the pro market is not where the revenue lies. It's in the consumer market. Don't you get it. Last chance to hold their tier in what?? If they could integrate the consumer and the pros, they will be successful but not pros alone.

Totally.

I will buy a new computer this year. I will not build a Hackintosh where I have to worry about things breaking on every OS update. It will either be the new MacPro, or a decent PC rig.

But the new MacPro better be up to date. If they give us a 2-year old video card again, I'm done.

Yet the PowerMac G4/5 was priced around or lower than their eMac/iMac line, and it didn't negatively impact iMac or PowerMac sales as they cater(ed) to very different markets (and still do).

That's right. I can't imagine a teenage girl asking for a Mac Pro for Christmas.

Consumers already have their iDevices. The pros that produce the content for those consumers? They don't have a current Mac tool. FinalCutX is a good example of where Apple has misstepped with pros.

I waited a year to buy a Mac Pro so that my iOS dev time wouldn't be 50% beach ball spectating, as it was on my MBAir and then MBPro. And I read every rumor about a new Mac Pro.

Ok, so that's a recap up thru this time last year.

And then I waited til March this year, and finally broke down and bought a Windows 7 workstation (via digitalstormonline.com). And no matter how much I hate working in a non *nix environment, Maya, Photoshop and Unity work the same, and run a whole lot faster.

I did a simple 3d fluid mandelbox test from my old Mac laptop environment to the new hardware, 42x faster (42s to render a particular scene vs <1s). So, sure, yeah, I should just do my mid-end animation stuff on a laptop, or wait ... ... ... ... for ... a ... ... Mac ... Pro.

If Apple releases a kick ass Mac Pro update this year, and then a solid, incremental update next year, like a company committed to workstations for people to develop higher end content, then I'll look at it then. Or maybe I'll buy Linux, or another Windows box from the nice professional folks who sold me the last one.

I realize Tim Cook will not shed a tear over my business, but I'm reduced to imagining Apple's internal dev team working in a giant cave full of iMacs and laptops, watching all their beachballs spin in unison.

Let me guess:

- 1/2" thick
- no optical drive
- no easy way to upgrade ram
- no easy way to upgrade HDD
- no easy way to upgrade video card
- base config will not have fusion drive
- special welding process will delay first shipments

:D

Ah, great news :), BUT........ who's gonna be the beta testers for the first of this new gen of Mac Pro?? Just saying going by their recent record....

pah, I'm waiting for the next Xbox, it'll kick the Pro's behind hahaha... well it'll play games better and cost less haha.

Good speculations.. Now here are mine:

Half the size of the current Mac Pro
No optical drive
Virtually little to no expansion.. maybe if u r lucky, 1 or 2 hard drive bays(one 3.5, the other 2.5)
Integrated shared video memory
Maybe thunderbolt
PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 slots for maybe 1 or 2 of them.
USB 3.0 or USB 2.0
SATA III or a mixture of SATA II and III

Really, WTFK!?

I want something more powerful than the MacMini and more upgradable than an iMac...for cheaper than the current Mac Pro

I think the original rumor was incorrectly understood. An update to the Mac Pro is contemplated for the year 3013, not 2013.
