it might be a very smart move to eliminate firewire from the Macbook because this would force many professionals and other users who need it to buy the Macbook Pro.

Although it seems to work for Apple more than any other tech company I've ever seen, forcing people into unecessary additional expenses is a sure way to cease to be relevant.

I am not trying to flame you, but I think it is our responsibility as Apple fans to complain loudly about any move that would seem to be a transparent money-grab. Of course, if they drop MB FW, it may be for perfectly legit reasons. I just can't stomach the scenario you brought up.

Apple is like any other company so they want to make the largest profit they can. Similarly, they choose not to put a 100 dollar dedicated video card into the macbook so that people are forced to buy the macbook pro for nearly a 1000 dollars more.

You gotta be joking though.. usb 2.0<<fw400<fw800.

I never said there was fw800 on the current macbooks, I've owned it before to know it only has the fw400.

One of my reasons to jump to the mbp from the macbook was the fw800. Its soo much easier to work with 1+TB files with fw800.

I remember I moved around 95GB worth of files from my 1TB external drive from my macbook (while the fw400 on the macbook was already connected with another external hdd) using USB and it took roughly 1hour 15 minutes.. fw800 took me 32 minutes.

I'm backing up 96 GB w/ Time Machine on USB and it's only done 25 GB after about 8 hours or so..... what is wrong here....

Something is wrong with either your computer or your external usb drive. A few weeks ago i backed up about a 100 GB w/ Time Machine in about 2 hours on a usb drive. Also time machine seems to go slower if there are many small files rather than a few big ones.

Yeah what the crap... I let it go over night and it's only now at 38.3GB. I've just got my logic board replaced... and speed transfers were this slow before as well so maybe it's the drive. Sigh! It's plugged into a hub but it's a USB 2.0 hub... would that slow it down that significantly? I tried plugging it directly into my computer and didn't see any gain in speed.
