I noticed there are rumors of a new Mac Mini. This made me wonder, since the Apple Studio Display is getting kind of old, are there any rumors of an update/refresh to the Apple Studio Display?

I could imagine them giving it pro-motion etc?

Fine with me too as a person who actually bought a Pro Dispay XDR in 2024!
Seriously, why don’t they take the iMac screen and make it a display for macmini and base Mac Studio users. Sell it for $499, I mean really people, who is paying $1599 on a monitor for a $599 macmini? It would sell like hotcakes to students looking for a screen for their MacBook Air/Pro laptops. You can’t tell me the profit margin aren’t there.

an Aussie company is selling a 17” 4k external supposedly designed for traveling, and for $800! anyway, the appeal of iMac is not having to fuss with anything or buy add ons. For a home user or a family with small children, it’s a 5 year purchase. I agree with you tho, and Apple could have a three tier lineup with a smaller 4k, but for the price attached to an Apple build I don’t see many MacBook users buying one. My students their laptops with cheaper external monitors, if they have them at all.

There are multiple 6k and 8k panels being made now, or being close to ready, so Apple actually has something to upgrade to. High resolution, high frequency, OLED panels are also appearing a year from now in sizes Apple prefers, but they are likely still too low in resolution for the XDR display, but would work for the Studio Display.

The biggest question Is wether current macs can properly drive them. Looking at the forums, it is often hit and miss if people can get them to work. Perhaps the M4 SOC makes it easier.

They'd probably prefer you didn't have a cheap Apple display that lasts a decade+ because then you'll be out of the market for buying new iMacs. I think their goal is for mainstream customers to keep buying entire computers (be it laptop or desktop) over and over.

I don’t necessarily disagree however this is an untapped market for Apple. Sales would probably be continuous for the following 2-3+years before it plateaus. Incremental upgrades to specifications would extend sales as is the case in tech. But I wholeheartedly agree that would affect iMac sales. I know it’s wishful thinking on my part. But a segment of the Apple experience is having the ecosystem made by Apple.

I'd definitely buy one

I'm interested in replacing my iMac with a Mini and an external display because I can also use it with my work laptop which is windows.

I find the studio display overpriced for what it is. I don't need a 5k Monitor. I'd become interested in it if they added 120 Hz. For the current price of 1.779 EUR I expect a bit more than what it offers

You think Apple would ever sell a 24" retina monitor for $499 when they charge $1599 for a 27" retina monitor?

I would say we will never see Apple offer a separate monitor under 27" going forward. They want all users who want an external display to buy the $1599 for a 27" retina monitor or the 32". They are not in the business of selling cheap monitors. If the profit margin was there they would be doing that but it's not as its very low. They sell low volume monitors with big profit margins and will never try and sell low margin monitors competing with china/korea. There is a reason why they stopped making monitors to begin with and they will simply stop making them before they attempt to go with the low profit margin approach.
