actually it would hurt apple, because different sizes means different resolutions, which mean more work for developers.

Apple treasures its developers and they're smart on doing so, they give them enough time to work on things and by having less "resolutions" to work on they don't have to bust their butts off, and because of that apps are better and therefore iDevices are better.

i know that many of us don't think about all the problems that a bunch of different products would create but if you bought an android and half of the apps crash you would realize how great is not to have to worry about which apps works and which don't.

You don't get it.

If a pixel can be represented in a larger or smaller physical space it still means the same thing and conveys the same scaled proportions.

If you go off about some ridiculous "fragmentation" BS I will LMFAO

New panels are being made. We don't live in a tech world bound by what was possible last week in the headlines.

The funniest thing with this rumor is that we are about a year away from this purported late 2012 release.

Due to development cycles, component availability, and production ramps in manufacturing, it is likely that Apple would not have something commercially viable running at this time.

But go ahead and bring on ludicrous speculation. I admit that I'm a shareholder and this sort of nonsensical garbage is largely non-detrimental to my investment portfolio. Naturally, my portfolio is far more diversified than just a pile of AAPL shares.

Indeed !

Tell me more of how diversified your portfolio is.

Or tell me of the joy in spreading the good news to the masses.

Prepare to laugh you a** off, cause I think you are the on who doesn't get it.

Yest the proportions are the same, but as the interface is based on using your fingers smaller targets, smaller space between buttons etc. might simply break the application from a usability point of view.

In a classic computer desktop paradigm this is a non-issue as we use a mouse-pointer that can fairly easily be moved with an accuracy close to a pixel. When touching a touch-screen however you actually obscure the area you're touching and the targets have to be a lot larger.

The fragmentation in question would be a real issue with a down-scaled iPad. Apple couldn't simply distribute existing iPad apps for the new device as a lot of them would simply be unusable...

RIDICULOUS !

You're talking about 2 less inches !!!

Oh my lord, yeah , it will all of a sudden be unusable

Most apps are scaled from iPhone to iPad very easily.

You have no argument....Just go home

Yes, iPhone apps are easy to upscale as no element becomes physically smaller to the user. You can ridicule all you want but you're simply wrong on this.

If you have an iPad specific app that uses the large screen size to its full benefit it will likely be very awkward to use on a smaller screen.

At the moment one of the clear benefits the iPad has had over its Android counterparts is the fact that it has had a lot more apps tailor-made to its particular screen size, rather than simply beign upscaled iPhone apps. Believe me, if you go through Apple's HIG for iOS you will learn to appreciate the thought that has gone into these details.

As a small-time iOS-developer I have some first hand knowledge about how changing sizes and spacing of screen elements even just a fraction, might change the feel of an app completely.

This is the perfect time to say "I Told You So".

Ha.. Ha.. Ha..

I knew when months ago all the haters said this would never happen, it was only a matter of time. The threads went on and on about how stupid it would be.

How did I know? Simple really, its a classic Steve Jobs smoke & mirrors trick.

I'm buying one the moment it's released. It will shelve my iPad2 for good. Only to be used at home.

7" is simply ideal for mobile use.

And once again I ask : Do you really think 2 less inches will make THAT much of a difference ?

I don't think so.

Come on... no one wants a 7" iPad !!!!!!
If they want to change the screen size they should at least make it a little bit larger (10.1"). ;)

Honestly I don't think it will make that much of a difference.
I know it will make that much of a difference.

And no, I'm not just being cocky. There a certainly apps that would work just fine (most games for instance), but a lot would not. Garageband for example: Several of the virtual keyboard-setups are already pushing it when it comes to the sizes of the keys. On a smaller screen these would be unusable, or Apple would have to make a different layout.

I'm sorry but you're just flat wrong.

If you still hold this opinion when it is released DON"T BUY IT .....Very simple.

I won't for other reasons but I would love to gift it to people

I'm sorry, but I think you and I read two different articles because the one that I read didn't say anything about this being confirmed news or give a release date (for that matter).

So I think your timing of "I told you so" is a bit misguided.

Have a second read
https://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/15/rumors-of-a-7-85-inch-ipad-mini-revived-again-for-late-2012/

Words like "Likely" "Experimenting" "Reportedly" "Rumoured" don't shout Confirmed to me.

I'm not saying Apple will never release a 7" iPad (although I personally don't see the added value). I'm simply saying that if doing so they will most likely have to cater for a different set of apps. Such a device should have no problem running any iPhone-app in an up-scaled mode, but I would be very surprised if Apple just allowed any existing iPad App to be sold for such a device, due to the reasons explained earlier...

As far as I'm concerned, I don't think there's a need for a screen size between iPad and iPhone.

But I really like to read these "analysts" stuff. :p

I just don't see how you can argue against something you never tried in real life.

It might work just fine. 2 less inches is not a big deal.

In the Android space with the Galaxy Tab 7' and the 10.1" it works the same

A 7-inch iPad will be great. Apple should make also a MacBook Air 7-inch. Because true portability is the number one feature in these cases!

Time will tell.

Then Samsung can sue Apple for copying their size...

This legal tiff Apple engages in is a testimoney to their flippant attitude towards keeping their eye on the ball.

Instead of being completely focused on innovating, they've diluted their focus in a very negative way. It's very revealing of who Apple has become.
