The "PowerBook" model designation comes to mind.

It was highly popular
Unique to Apple
Used successfully for years
An ideal example of success.

Then Apple killed it...

With the excuse that Intel notebooks needed a new name and that 'PowerBook' was associated with the PowerPC chip. There were WAY many 68k PowerBooks before the PowerPC was even a thing.

I was a windows/linux user until 2007 when I bought my first mac. but unless you've never watched an apple event/seen a commercial where they mention OS X/been to an apple store where an employee says the name/are completely unaware that 8/9 came before it because you've never been on the internet ever, you probably know that's it's supposed to be a ten. and it's kind of ridiculous to refuse to call a product by its literal, actual name and insist your way is perfectly right just because it feels weird to say it the right way.
1) I never said that you only hear "OS Ex".
2) I never said that I insist to call it by its wrong name. It's just that I don't give a damn when I slip "Ex" instead of "ten".
3) I merely tried to explain how it might happen, I'm not "defending" intentionally calling it the wrong way, but I don't get the bewilderment of how this could POSSIBLY happen, as if you're forced through an exam before you're allowed to buy your first Mac.
4) Most Apple users don't even watch the ads or keynotes that attentive. Sure, many may do and that's fine, I do that myself, but just because you hear something the correct way all the time, doesn't mean you may not slip and adapt another way of saying "OS X".
5) Never said it feels weird to say it the right way.

You shouldn't read that much Into my words as if every of my sentences hoLds a hidden message, you probabLy have a certain idea of why people woUld do this incredible criMe to Apple culture and are ready to act as a harsher versIoN of the Apple PR arm, maybe iT's just me readIng too much into your message though. ;)

Apple will rebrand OSX and use macOS when they roll out the new iMacs using the A10 desktop processors as they fade out the use of x86 chipset.
That was exactly my thought. Either we both came up with the same theory or you got it from me :p

Everybody knows that X is a "10" in Roman numerals, right? Just checking.
Regarding the topic, I think it will come down to this: Will Apple remain a maker of serious computers? Or is Apple transforming into a Lifestyle Products corporation? The telling will be in what a rebranded OS can run. (Hint: If the featured computer can't run Pro Tools, Media Composer, or VSL and Waves plugins, then it's probably a lifestyle product.

I have always called it OS X (Saying X instead of 10). I know its wrong, but I was a chid when OSX came out and thats how I pronounced it then and I like it better than saying OS 10, and it means the same thing anyway.

I really would love to see the return of "Mac" in Mac OS X. I never understood why they dropped it in the first place.

Also, if true, I wonder if the lower case "m" and the drop of the "X" will be part of Apple's official rebranding of the name, which I'd be completely fine with. It would make Apple's line of OS names 100% consistent.

Fix the finder and green button by allowing OPTIONS in system preferences. The stupidity with the lack of true cut/paste commands and the inability to maximize a window without having to hide the menu bar or dock is way overdue for a FIX.

Hopefully Apple pulls it's head out of it's ass and starts adding the options... getting tired of being forced to use OS X more like iOS with every release.
Keyboard shortcuts. I would suggest learning them.

I've been wondering how they are going to do this. It's be on 10.xx for a long time, macos would fit with the other os names.

I don't care what they call it, as long as they don't blend it with iOS! Keep macs mac and iOS devices separate!

The name "macOS" is NOT commonly used as an identifier for the system. I've looked at a lot of Apple's own binaries and they always refer to It as "macos" or "macosx", the only instance where It's called "macOS" is in that file.

Here is another point... a watch is NOT a Mac. An Apple TV is also NOT a Mac; it would be seriously bizarre to call the operating systems for those devices "macOS". Surely you must realize this, yeah??
How about the fact that they are COMPLETELY different operating systems?? Like OS X is a few gb, while watchOS is a few mb.
But sure... continue thinking that Apple collectively lost their damn minds & are going to call them the exact same name.
Lol, that's like "guessing" that they are going to change the name of the MacBook Pro, the iPad Air, & the Apple Watch all to "MacThing" & pray that it doesn't get to confusing.
Look, I get that it's a natural reaction to defend your position if it's being attacked, but in this case- trust me... the "guess" was just a bad one. It's indefensible.
Again I say:
Apple is NOT taking the four distinct operating systems of iOS, OS X, tvOS, and watchOS and changing the names of all of them simultaneously to "macOS". That idea is laughable & has nothing remotely to do with what this rumor states.
The rumor is: OS X may be renamed macOS. That's it. Nothing more - nothing less.
Ok. I have lost my stance completely in this thread. I shall stop from now.
Bottom line: this is even possible that "macOS" is just a typo, not anything informative. Ok. Take care.

Lucky they did, cant think of any current Apple laptops where the word power would be a good fit. Instead I think they should start trademaking a few antonyms, like ImpotenceBook, InabilityBook, DisabiltyBook, InaptitudeBook... the list goes on.

In my eyes, "macOS" looks like a C-variable OS with the mac type prefix. Pretty old fashioned. But who cares, MacOSX has not been a brand anymore since all the other OSs.

Your mind may be slipping. The LC III shipped with System 7.1.

Now bring back the Happy Mac! Am I too old that I remember this back when I had Mac System 6.0 on my Macintosh LC III?

I have used Macs since it was "System 7._".

It became Mac OS with versions 8.x and 9.x.

Mac OS 10 was labeled "X" (Roman Numeral 10) because it ties it to UNIX. However, not one person I know calls it "ten." Especially after 15 years.

I've caught Apple Retail Store employees also referring to it as OH-ES-EX. Should they be reported for termination?

I guess you also abhor the use of greek letters.

I do abhor the use of greek letters, especially when I was a student. I hated that a bunch of science and math classes hit me with these dumb greek symbols which slowed me down so much and induced massive writing fatigue. Typing out homework saved me, but writing them on tests was painful and slow. I just got away with a more natural notation like d for delta, etc. when I had to handwrite.

Marketing tends to live in their own little world. Especially when you have great tech to back it up. The problem is that Apple no longer has great tech to back up the marketing. What does that mean? It means that we are going to see Marketing flopping around trying this and that to make up for mediocre products. Remakes and rebrands only work for short periods.

At some point if Apple wants to stay relevant, they have to produce the best products. That means the best Macs, where right now they are 3 or 4 years behind. The best phones, near the top, but struggling to stay ahead. Everything else is just a side show. For a company that claims to innovate, they seem to have lost their way. Not only are they not innovating, but they are not engineering either. It is painful to watch.
