As a die-hard iPhone SE user due to the size of the device, I wasn't happy with the SE rumours pointing to an iPhone 7/8 style device launching in the coming months, however, I also stumbled across this via Apple Insider -https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/12/09/rosenblatt-spews-specs-for-six-iphone-12-models-while-reiterating-sell-rating-on-aapl-shares :

"For the "iPhone 12" range, Zhang expects there to be a far wider array of models to choose from than Apple has ever offered before, in part due to the introduction of 5G.

The analyst's model predictions include:

  • iPhone 12 4G with a 6.1-inch LCD screen and dual rear cameras
  • iPhone 12 Pro 4G with a 5.4-inch OLED screen and dual rear cameras
  • iPhone 12 Pro 5G with a 5.4-inch OLED display and dual rear cameras
  • iPhone 12 Pro Plus 4G with a 6.1-inch OLED display and a triple rear camera with Time-of-Flight 3D sensing capabilities
  • iPhone 12 Pro Plus 5G using a 6.1-inch OLED screen, triple camera setup, and ToF features
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G with a 6.1-inch OLED panel, the triple camera setup, and ToF. "

Could the rumoured 5.4" iPhone X style design be the true SE replacement we've been waiting for?

yes, but.
i think the idea model would indeed be basically near bezel-less as the rumored 5.4" model is, but, without notch (under/in screen Touch ID). hopefully available 2021 September.
truly still pocketable with no compromise.

the 4G or 5G interchangeability would be unique for apple, but with 5G carrier rollouts maybe really taking still 2 or 3 years still, it makes sense.

If it’s true, it might only be a few mm smaller than the 6/7/8, but I’ve also seen mockups that call for it to be a few mm larger, too. Either way, it might not be the “pocketable“ phone that you and I love in the SE.

Ah damn. I guess we can only hold out so much longer. My SE is still amazing, but a year or two from now it's going to be slow, and I love the camera my friends have on their iPhone X series phones.

We may just have to settle on a 5.4" version. At least it's the same size as the 8 (which the new SE is) but in an X-like design

It’s gonna be close to the physical size of a X/XS. Which se users consider oversized.

I have been thinking about what phone I’ll get this coming September since these leaks came out. I currently own an iPhone 11 Pro, which I’ve always felt was to big for my taste. I didn’t want to lose high end Pro features in an upcoming 5.4” iPhone, but I’ve decided it’s the model I’ll buy. If I can barely wrap my hands around the 5.8” iPhone, there’s no way I’ll get used to a 6.1” model. I am worried about battery life in the upcoming 5.4” phone but I think I have no choice but to go smaller this time around. I desperately wish to return to the good old days of one handed use.

If the new SE has a notch I am out. It would actually be really cool if the did the SE with no bezels no notch and under the screen fingerprint reader with pop up selfie camera, I’d buy that in a heartbeat hell I would buy another one just to put it in a spinning glass case
I suspect that we’ll have notches for quite a few years. I feel that Apple is using the notch as a way to differentiate itself from Android-based all screen phones. Similar to the circle home button, it started with function and then became a branding differentiation.

A pop up camera is not a good idea. The chances of mechanical issues is too high for Apple to consider.

Why is the notch smaller? The sensors don’t get smaller just because the screen does.

Answer: No.... because although YOU were attracted to the SE due to its size, that is only ONE reason why the SE is attractive to many:
  • size
  • price
  • "classic" form-factor
  • battle-tested internals (has there been an iPhone produced after the SE that has fewer hardware issues?)
  • headphone jack
  • touch ID
Ultimately, it is one's definition of "true" that will determine if that rumored device is an SE replacement.

Why don’t you get an 8 now and trade it in later when something better comes out?

iPhone 8 costs $500, i'd rather wait 2-3 months and get SE2 with up-to-date hardware for the same price. I dont live in the US, tax is included in the price.
