Samsung X5 should work with a 2017 iMac. Be aware that these can run on the hot side. I'd probably let this pass by, myself. But it will be fastest (though hot).
Instead of the "t7 touch", you want the plain "t7" if you get one of these.
The "touch" part adds nothing useful as a boot drive.
Another way to do it:
- Get an nvme "blade SSD" of your choice (must be "nvme", "m2" won't do).
- Get a USB3.1 gen2 enclosure
- Put the drive inside (there's really nothing to this).
Now you have a "do it yourself" USB3.1 gen2 drive that will give you reads in the 960MBps range - VERY good.
I like buying my own components and putting them together myself (as with the nvme drive). That way I know how they go together, and if I ever need to open them up, I know how they disassemble, as well.
