Can you imagine explaining that to the operator when he rang 999 or whatever?

I am glad it all ended well, because I really couldn't help laughing.

This is the thing – they're a bloody nuisance these mobility scooters. The town where my parents live has a very large elderly population, and they're everywhere, more often than not speeding along the pavements paying scant regard to any unsuspecting pedestrians who are unfortunate enough to be in their way.

I'm sorry if this sounds unkind, but if Mrs Bishop wasn't in a fit state to drive it she shouldn't have been doing so, in exactly the same way that you shouldn't drive a car if you're in serious danger of nodding off. Had one of the motorists she encountered hit her while she was 'swerving' around the road 'half-asleep', they'd no doubt have had the book thrown at them.
