Runaway processes on the daily

Every day, something decides to go nuts and hog over 100%, heat up the computer, make the fans run full blast, kill the battery, etc. And it's always a different app. Sometimes it's Safari, sometimes Mail, sometimes Calendar, sometimes something else. Closing and restarting the apps stops the problem, but I hate having to restart my work.

Any ideas why this might be happening?
