Can I connect my Apple TV and play it on the Mac, instead of a television?

And instead of using a tv, can I connect the Apple TV using the thunderbolt displays which Apple makes, the 4K and 5k ones instead of a tv?

If your Mac has video in, then yes. You might need a second cable for sound, as I don't know if a HDMI to thunderbolt cable has sound and whether a Mac accepts sound over thunderbolt.

There is no thunderbolt display running at 4K/5K, just the iMac, and the Apple TV doesn't have 4K anyway. The 4K/5K iMac cannot be used as a display at all (no target display mode).

And what if I use an older display that Apple made not the 4K.. ?
