Running apps from a hard drive

Does anyone know if it is possible to run apps from an external hard drive? and if so is there a proper procedure in doing so? :apple:
 
On a Mac, you can run most application from any storage media! It could even be a read-only medium, or on a server. However some applications will prefer to run from a local drive.
