Running games and apps off of an external drive?

I have a macbook pro and the hard drive is filling up.
Is it possible to put some games or software on an external drive rather than on the boot drive and run them from there in order to save space on the boot drive?
I would use a 7200 rpm drive with a firewire 800 connection. Would this affect the performance of the games?

Yes that can be done. Loading times may be longer because of FW800 limit but not much because most 2.5" HDs can't saturate the 80MB/s which is FW800's real world maximum
