The 4850 packed up and my imac would only boot in safe mode.I had internet access but no sound and no videos.I deleted all the graphics kexts and now the mac boots up fine.I can watch videos with sound but only in a window. Please correct me if im wrong but is the i5 processor doing all the work now and if i were to send my gpu away for a reball would the mac still boot?

The i5 has an iGPU, but unless you can reverse-engineer Apple's EFI to unlock the use of the iGPU, it's not possible to use it.

You deleted the kexts which would only effect OS X, not windows which is why you can watch videos in Windows.

Can you boot up in OS X? If it was the GPU why would the sound not work. Sounds like some other issue if you having issues with audio.

Personally, I'd not be messing around with removing kexts - that's typically a sure fire way to corrupt your OS X installation - but that's just me.

There is nothing wrong with the sound.Sound is automatically disabled when booting in safe mode along with various other non essential features so for example if it was a sound related problem causing the computer not to boot you could boot up and possibly arrange the culprit. In my case it was graphics related so deleting the kexts allowed me to boot in normal mode just losing some graphics functionality but with out losing my sound or losing the ability to read external hard disks as i would in safe mode.I did not say i could boot in windows but rather i can now only watch videos in windows as not in full screen.I deleted kexts as a last resort taking the chance of my os becoming a little unstable was better than no booting whatsoever.I also did a double install of mavericks just in case.
