So had a play around with strava, run keeper and the apple workout app.

All apps show current pace- but I couldn't find a way for any of them to show average pace- do any of you know how to get that?

Think the concern around 3rd party apps is a valid one at this stage - the run keeper and strava apps look identical just showing, time, distance and current pace.

Also is there any way to get the workout app to show miles in decimals rather than feet- just like run keeper and strava does?

I think there is a fairly fluid line between average pace and current pace. Because after all, current pace is still an average over a certain amount of time.

Is that the Gold Coast marathon? I'm running the Sydney marathon in Sept and want to run the London next year. Maybe I'll do the Gold cost after it if I still have two legs.

no actually the Great Ocean Road marathon! It's actually 44k because it's from Lorne to Apollo Bay, but they give you two times- marathon and 44k.

I'm actually scared witless of the weather - there's a good chance it could be a howling southerly the whole freaking way.

Super spectacular though. I can't wait. Be interesting to see how many Apple Watch's I spot!

Good luck with that. I'll look into it for next year.

Just been for a short run with the watch running the workout app and Strava running on my phone. Strava said 4.5m, Workout said 4.13m. I wonder if the app can't access the GPS on the phone if Strava's running?

Do you get a map view from the workout app?

I typically use iSmoothRun. They were the first with full Pebble support and promised Apple Watch support. However, Apple ****ed up another launch and I'm still waiting on my watch even though I ordered within 4 minutes of launch. Silly me didn't try the app instead of the website first.

Good luck for tomorrow! I'm helping at the finish, so will be keeping a look out for people wearing apple watches.

Went for a test jog this afternoon. Both Watch and iPhone dropped 10% in 20 minutes while running MiCoach and the Workout app.

I think my plan is to still use both, but to activate power saving mode in the Workout app so it doesn't measure heart rate. I would have liked to have plot and export my heart rate over the race, but as there isn't an app that can do that at the moment, merely losing the instant heart rate information is not a huge loss. I'll also turn the screen off on the phone.

A couple of other observations. The Watch clearly uses a different time period to measure pace than MiCoach as they very rarely aligned.

Further there was a small, but noticeable discrepancy in distance measured between the two apps. This surprised me. I always assumed the phone hardware basically told the apps how far had been travelled, so there would not be a discrepancy. But no, it seems each app processes the data in its own way and comes up with different results.

Enjoying having an Apple Watch, but as a very preliminary view, I don't think it is quite there as a device for serious runners. Thankfully, I think a lot of the improvements can come from app/software development.

I'll know more tomorrow though!

Think I will be using run keeper and that only - at least if the watch app fails - I've still got the iPhone to turn to!

Speaking of the activity app, I tried that versus using workout-other for cardio. My wife used the workout app. My watch gave me credit for 4 minutes of exercise in the 30 minutes we worked out. She received credit for the whole time. I'm guessing it's the format that makes the difference.

I plan to try the workout and Strava apps for cycling versus my Garmin and see what I get. Good luck with your run.

Hi all. Promised I'd report back so here I am.

Firstly another great day and race. I ran 3h13, which despite fading from 3h05 pace in the last five miles, is still a PB.

Onto the watch. Unfortunately, it was abysmal. It measured a total distance of just 21 miles. Definitely not a GPS problem with my phone, as thankfully I was simultaneously running Adidas Micoach on the phone that correctly measured the distance. I knew things weren't going to be great when it measured 0.6 miles at the first mile marker.

So that meant the pace readings were completely wrong on the watch, and it was utterly useless as a reference point. I had to keep glancing down at my phone on my shoulder.

And as we know, for the 21 miles it did manage to measure - what do I get? A few rings in the activity app filled up. All very underwhelming.

The result is that I'm taking the watch back today. It's just not currently fit for purpose for what I want it to do, and I'm not willing to lend Apple £300 for the time they need to get it sorted (which may not even be this first version of the watch).

Putting the fitness usage to one side, I must admit I've been a little unimpressed in general. I really really want to like it, but for me, it just doesn't stream data quickly enough off the phone. What use are glances that take longer to load that it would take to look at your phone? I must admit, these quiet disappointments have made the decision to take it back even easier.

Thanks for the feedback. Really disappointing that it could not track the distance correctly given the phone was just there with its GPS.

How about the HR monitor? Was that accurate?

Congratulations on completing the run! Disappointing to hear about the watch. Makes me wonder whether all the talk about thousands of hours invested in research was hyperbole or if the Watch needs some time to calibrate to compensate.

To balance out your experience, I went for one of my usual run yesterday. I ran Strava and the Apple workout app together and set off. At the end they both showed exactly the same distance. Strava kept a map of my route and Workout gave me the ability to check my heart rate along the way.

The only thing that didn't quite match up for the me was the calories burned, but Im assuming the Workout app is more accurate as it has the ability to monitor your heart rate.

Because of fears about battery drain, had to put the workout app on the watch in power saving mode, so no HR readings.

I think it's a massive shame that none of the third party running apps (Strava, Runkeeper etc) have access to the HR readings of the watch. Really surprising.

What makes it interesting is that the phone has the accurate data. That is kinda poor that the watch couldn't track accurately a run .

I wouldn't think it's a calibration issue. GPS is GPS right?

Well congratulations on the PB finish !

I'm going to test the Apple watch against the Microsoft band this week and see how it performs.

I ran again with Nike running app and it worked flawlessly the second time. Much better experience. Only 12 miles compared to your achievment. Great PB by the way.

holy crap that's an awesome time man.

Shame it didn't go so well with the watch. I ran 36k yesterday and got almost exactly the same reading as my mates Garmin watch. I found it super accurate.

oh, well there's your problem. Apparently the power saving mode kills accuracy. I wouldn't worry next time. As I said, I did 36k in 3.5 hours and still had 38% left. Everything was running, heart monitor, the lot

Well done in the time, superb effort. I was watching it on TV and looking out for some Apple watches. I agree with your decision to return it as it's not a performer for fitness purposes yet. If battery life is such a concern, it has already failed.

I'm definitely going to be running London next year. Maybe we'll have Apple Watch 2 for it.

Interesting what you say about power saving mode. I didn't realise that.
