Would it be possible to run Mac OS 9 (without dual booting Tiger) natively from this iBook, or do I need an older machine to do that (i.e. 2002 or earlier)

I have been looking for an older Mac laptop that runs exclusively OS 9 natively and isn't too overpriced. If this can't run OS 9 only, do you have any more suggestions? I know the clamshells are kind of expensive, and the Snow iBooks are rare to come across.

Thanks.

I have that exact machine. In fact, I'm digging it out today to install some Windows 95 VPC stuff on it. It'll boot OS 9 just fine.

I know the clamshells are kind of expensive...

The prices are ridiculous, aren't they? Though I did come across one on Facebook Marketplace not too long ago for £25/30 but unsurprisingly someone else swooped in before me.

...and the Snow iBooks are rare to come across.

I've got four working machines - and three of them were obtained via eBay! :D

There always loads on there. Just search with "iBook" and see for yourself.

I’ve had a few of the white G3 iBooks (Ice and Snow), which can all boot Mac OS 9.x, but the only model that has stood the test of time (for me) is the original series with the Rage Mobility 128 GPU (500Mhz / 600MHz). All of the models using the Radeon Mobility / 7500 GPU have died on me.

Buyer beware, the lead-free solder on those models couldn’t handle the upside down GPU design. The solder balls just give out over time.

My G3 600 came from eBay for around $50 with 10.4 installed on it. I had a Mac OS 9 installer downloaded from MacOS9lives.com which booted and ran, and did a clean install of 9.2.2 on it. It works perfectly.... and a lot faster than 10.4!

It turned my iBook into a great system!
