running mpg files..??

Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to macs although i'm a PC support techincian i've had no problem setting it up with with my PC network, I have transferred some mpg files over to the mac but the mac doesn't seem to have a program that can open them, the main reason that i wanted to do this is that i really like the software packaged with OS Tiger for DVD authourizing basically i would like to know if there is some kind of software plugin that will do the trick for me if not then what format will the mac read and hopefully i can convert it to that before i transfer it to the mac...??
