I run Ubuntu on my 09 mbp, so c2d vs i-series and it runs well for DD tasks. Temps range from 80F to topping out with the gpu at 140-150F. I don’t keep this on my lap mind you. It sits on an active fan ONN cooler or passively cooled on an aluminum rain design M stand all day.

Between the two it is still very quiet - a gentle hum which I find soothing. Anyways, I have not taken the time to repaste this unit yet as thermals are mostly reasonable for its light DD load although I probably should considering it’s age.

Pulling the history on this box thus far it looks like at some point the gpu thermals maxed at 181F (no idea what I was doing there lol) with fan speed maxed at 3894rpm but looks like average is around 150F with average fan speeds of 1900-2100 rpm.

From memory (2008 c2d) seems to be reasonable if not running on the cool side 🙂 My 15" 2008 MBP ran hotter than Hades. Ironically it limped along on one fan for about six months until I could source a replacement. Sadly it eventually succumbed to age; battery exploded (not good), hinge & locking mechanism, needed a third set of fans, basically too much cost to revive 🙁 but it did last 14 years and still ran 🙂

It can be installed with the Mint Software Manager

DESCRIPTION
macfanctld is a daemon that reads temperature sensors and adjust the fan(s) speed on MacBook's. macfanctld is configurable and logs temp and fan data to a file. macfanctld uses three sources to determine the fan speeed: 1) average temperature from all sensors, 2) sensor TC0P [CPU 0 Proximity Temp and 3] and sensor TG0P [GPU 0 Proximity Temp]. Each source's impact on fan speed can be individually adjusted to fine tune working temperature on different MacBooks.

Important: macfanctld depends on applesmc-dkms.
