Couldn’t literally any app be used in a criminal way?

Quite literally any tool can be used in a criminal way, including a fork, a rope, or a pencil.

Spoons and underwear not so much, but they seem like the exception to the rule.

The late Alan Rickman begs to differ.

Wait, where are all the EU supporters? I'm surprised I don't see the usual names defending Russia's right to exert tight control of their markets and to limit the tech their citizens may use. Such hypocrisy.

Because the EU and the UK demanding backdoors is that much different?

did Russia demand a backdoor before blocking all these apps? and if Russia is on par with evil EU, I guess it makes them no worse than China, where Apple will bend over backwards whatever the order.

The relationship between Russia and Apple is a bit more straightforward. In 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, Apple suspended most of its operations in Russia. It removed Russian state apps from the App Store and stopped all product sales in Russia. It also stopped updating information for Ukraine in Apple Maps so that Russia could not use the information for military purposes. In 2023, the Russian FSB publicly accused Apple of adding backdoors for the NSA to allow spy in Russia. Since Apple cannot stop third-party and grey market sales, its products are used in Russia. Given the contentious relationship, it is easy to see why Russia would want to block FaceTime rather than seek Apple's cooperation.

As for Apple's cooperation with the Chinese government, it's called Globalism and Capitalism. Of course Apple will try to accommodate China as much as it reasonably can. China accounts for ~17% of Apple's revenue–and likely to go up this year with the success of the iPhone 17. Based on recent estimates, over 90% of iPhones and many other Apple products are manufactured or assembled in China. It would be detrimental to business for Apple to start any kind of fight with China. That said, it has defended itself against lawsuits file in China. Most notably, in 2024 the Chinese courts rejected an anti-trust case against Apple regarding app-store fees and app-store dominance. It seems that, on some measures, communist China is quite a but more Capitalist than the EU.

No one is asking for Apple’s "cooperation" in China, Russia, India, or the EU. All Apple needs to do is operate in a given area according to the laws of that area. Apple is not there for "regime change."
True, but China and India are at least not waging a war against a neighboring nation (at least not yet, hint: Taiwan).
Have you heard that someone is apparently planning a war with a South American country, by the way?

just like EU and UK then.

not 'Chinese courts', but some Shanghai IP one, which is why the case is now back with China's antitrust regulator.

so kowtowing in China = capitalism = good, getting banned in Russia = 'straightforward', from which follows what, that EU is more Communist than China? get a grip.

There are sources on Wikipedia as well… some of the articles are straight from books with the exact paragraphs too.
Wikipedia works and has worked for me and at my company & school.

Four pages into the thread and everyone has missed the real reason. It's their Gov't messenger MAX which is being heavily pushed. It is planned to become a version of WeChat, a super app with login, payment, calls, etc. And, obviously, with all the "strings" attached to it, and despite the pervasive push, still very raw.

Do you really trust any of the US-born apps, like Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.? China is quite indifferent to US-born apps, and Russia and India are moving in that direction as well. Watch some videos like this.

what direction, half of Russians don't even have a plumbed-in toilet,
Sure, keep believing in that type of nonsense, but you might want to remember that in English, the first letter of a sentence should be capitalised. :)

I trust you can read Russian? in which case I agree, official Russian data is usually full of nonsense, so in this case it's probably even more than half.
