S.M.A.R.T. Status and Zeroing Data

In some threads, such as this one, people seem to have come back with a "VERIFIED" after zeroing data and reinsalling Tiger. Two questions:

(1) Can any of those involved say how long there HD continued to function?

(2) How exactly do I "zero the data"? Is this just done through the Tiger "Erase and Install" option?

Go to Disk Utility >> click on your hdd >> click the erase tab >> go to security options at the bottom >> zero data
