Did anyone purchase a S24 ULTRA or a pixel Pro last minute after seeing the apple event?

I really loved the dessert gold colour, but no AI from launch on a phone built from the ground up, and no 120hz screen on the 16 standard made it a last minute android purchase.

Especially with good discounts on both pixel and samsung at the monent here in the UK.

S24 Ultra owner here and 6.9” is a beast size phone. Gonna compare to 16 Pro Max after all Samsung makes the display for both.

🫨 unexpected! sure no ai but like it’ll come with Siri right out the box 😏

I just had my hands on a S24Ultra for a few days before I sold it.
Great hardware, they finally got all the borders of the display to be equal width which made it look so much better.
Samsung also managed to put the camera equal distance from the top and side of the phone (the top camera) which again looks quite decent.
These are all design details Android phones have struggled in the past.

However when I boot up the phone, open the app drawer and see all these duplicated Samsung/Google apps, I don't want to use it anymore.

There's also the eternal issue of color management, somehow nobody can do it right except Apple. It doesn't matter how amazing the display they have, if apps (including the launcher) can't consistently use the correct color profile then it's all pointless.

Nothing is private on your devices. No matter what Apple tells you :)
Luckily, as a cryptographer, I am capable of reasoning about this without help from a marketing department.

Which is why I only own Android devices for development and research purposes. I’d never use one for personal use.

Though if one is insistent on an Android, Pixel is the only defensible choice. Running GrapheneOS; not the stock Google OS.

After the Apple event I spent some time looking at the state of play on Android and decided it was not for me. I don't want a giant phone and Samsung reserves their best stuff for that. I strongly considered a Pixel 9 Pro, but too many reviews show it lagging when taking full resolution pics. If it is doing that now, what will it look like down the line? Tensor is not there yet. Otherwise, you are looking at sketchy Chinese brands which have their own issues.

If the reviewers widely pan the 16s, I will drag my 13PM through 2025 and see what that brings.
