You can unlock it but that won't enable Apple Pay as far as I'm aware. You need your phone for that.

You do raise a good point... I can't answer that question because I do not get much use out of Apple Pay. Maybe someone else can answer... Regardless if there isn't a current fix you'd think that would be addressed fairly quickly.

Apple Pay on all generations is a Native process. no need for the phone.
