Has anyone upgraded from the Apple Watch S8 to the S9 and see much reason to upgrade? What differences did you notice the most? I'm waiting to see how well the double finger tapping thingie works before deciding but that's not coming until later.

I did not. The on-board Siri sounds like a great addition but I'm waiting for SX/U3.

Unless perhaps I can find a great deal on an U1, that's something I'm loosely considering too.

For those who went from a S6/S7/S8 to the S9... does the S9 look noticeably brighter outside in bright light?

No consideration on my part to do an upgrade with less than a year on the Apple Watch Series 8. I can not justify when my series 8 has been great and I probably do the what I have done in the past and keep it until the battery expires like I did replacing my original Apple Watch with the series 8 or possible when the series 8 is no longer supported in 4-5 years

Yes it is brighter but I never had a problem with the S8 being too dim in the sunlight so it's not exactly game changing. I'm also looking forward to using the 1 nit dim display but I haven't tried it out yet.

It does seem like the graphics are a bit snappier and smoother too.

I upgraded 41mm aluminum GPS S8 to S9 because I was going to buy a new band anyway. Since the new watches come with a band, I figured that after trading in my S8 the equivalent S9 watch will only cost me $160 plus the cost of the band I was planning to get. So why not just get a new watch too, I said to myself. Otherwise, I would have just held onto the S8.

So if you're planning to buy a new band maybe it's worth the extra $ to upgrade the watch too with the max trade in value (or sell it yourself for more).

Arriving tomorrow. Hoping for better battery life and lower brightness display in dark settings.

I barey justified a S6 to S9 upgrade. Still not 100% sold.

If I’d been on an S8, I’d take a wait and see whether something not obvious might show up thatd make it seem worth it.
Just made the jump from an S4, which was still doing pretty well, and half the reason was the size. I got the large 45mm S9 to replace a small 40mm S4.

I upgraded. Haven't really noticed the brighter screen yet. One thing I did notice is how much quicker the watch responds to button presses. Ending workouts and moving around the workout app is noticeably faster, not that it justifies upgrading. I traded in my old watch and wanted a new band, so the S9 really cost me less than $200 if I look at it that way.

I upgraded from an S7 mainly because the mic on my s7 was faulty so I thought I might as well just upgrade plus get back to 100% battery health (from 84% on my S7). As it turned out my mic problem went away after a WatchOS update but by that time I’d pre-ordered the S9 so though I might as well go ahead. So far I’m noticing no difference whatsoever, even onboard processing for Siri doesn’t feel any different to me vs my S7.

I’m curious to try double-tap when it gets released but having played with the accessibility gestures on my S7 I really don’t understand why Apple claims it needs the latest SoC to be able to recognise them. Still, if Apple is restricting it to the latest models I suppose that’s probably one worthwhile benefit I’ll get because I do like the sound of it even though I’m dubious about the rationale for restricting it to this year’s models only.

Upgrading wasn’t a big investment for me so I’m not too bothered but had it not been for my mic false alarm I wouldn’t have bothered.

Can't you just send the 9 back to Apple for a refund under the 14 days rule?

I forgot to mention another reason that I’m upgrading. The noise level detection feature on my s8 is broken. When I wash my hands I get a prompt that the noise level is 90dB. 😂

Hopefully the s9 fixed this.

That happens with my Series 5 as well and I think it is normal, I guess it is triggered when high pressure water hits the microphone.

For some reason doesn't happen with my Ultra, but it may be because those have a different mic arrangement.

Interesting. I wonder if the shape of my sink is part of the issue.

It happens to me in both my sink and shower, both have high water pressure, and I exchanged my S5 twice, so it wasn't the case of a defective unit either.

If you enable the "water" mode, it won't happen, but obviously is a hassle when just washing your hands.

I could but now I've got it I'm not too fussed so I'm just going to keep it. Plus I do suspect that I will quite like the double-tap feature so that's a plus as well.
That's what I am looking at. I currently have an SS S8 and love it, but I am interested in getting the regular S9 in addition, mainly for that feature. Now that the watch supports several named timers, that would be heaven to me while cooking different things and being able to just double tap and dismiss each timer when it goes off. This sounds rather silly really, but seriously, I have so many different stuff going on that this sounds awesome to me.

I've only had the S9 for a day but so far I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from the S8. I primarily got it to future-proof for features like double tap. Assuming it works well, double tap will be very useful while I am cooking and I don't want to touch my watch or phone with wet or messy hands.
