Seriously ... can anybody explain me why Safari 120Hz (on ProMotion MacBooks, of course) STILL isn't default and needs to be turned on in the developer settings? I don't get it and it starts to annoy me like hell to remember to tweak the developer menu again after Safari updates.

Such a strange decision. /rant over

Let me guess, you're using the testufo website...
Indeed. Am I a dumb idiot and turning off the "Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps" is useless as Safari already uses 120Hz correctly on "normal" sites?

You make it sound like you can’t tell the difference without relying on some external website. Also, didn’t macOS v12.2 add ProMotion support to Safari back in January 2022?

Well that is the kind of nice helpful answer I like on Internet forums 🙄

Problem is even the creator of that website/program came on these forums to say it doesn’t work properly for Safari. There’s also a note on the webpage saying Safari isn’t supported. Additionally, it doesn’t show 120hz on the iPhone either so while I think ProMotion is more noticeable on iPhones than MacBooks (probably due to oled response time) the testufo isn’t a reliable test.

Remember, Apple uses a variable refresh rate (great battery life) so a constant 120hz from any other device will probably look better than a variable one.

Good to know, thanks – didn't know about that. The fact that turning off "Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps" indeed makes the (very visible) smoothness difference between 60fps and 120fps on the specific UFO test site (including correctly shown numbers) is confusing then. And judging by a lot of other threads in the Internet, I'm not nearly the only one who thought so, still a lot of questions how to turn 120Hz back on Safari in Sonoma as the developer menu changed etc. Thanks for the clarification. Still wondering what the "Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps" (by default on) setting is about then in this case.
