After updating my iMac 2019 to Safari 14, many websites like CNN and eBay and even Macrumors refuse to work. They just reload due to some error, then crashes the site saying "Safari A problem repeatedly occurred" ... I have cleared history, cache, removed plugins, reset PRAM, SMC, and no go. If I turn off "Enable Javascript" it works, but then many websites are not functional. I also tried uninstall/reinstall Java as well. nothing works. Any ideas?

Done. Thank you.

spent two hours on chat with Apple support last night, tried most of the stuff that’s already been seen on other YouTube videos and other things that are similar. Ended up having to boat in recovery mode and reinstall Mojave and now it seems to be back to normal, reverted back to Safari version 13. I guess I will upgrade eventually to macOS Big Sur, but I was holding out since I have an app that I use occasionally which is not 64-bit compatible

Was there a way to revert back to Safari 13 without a full OS reinstall?

Try these steps:
  • Download the latest 10.14.6 Mojave installer from the Mac App Store.
  • Follow steps outlined in the link below.
  • Restart back to normal mode.
  • Run the Mojave installer that downloaded from the Mac App Store. This should bring back v13 of Safari.

is using the guest account the same thing? 'cause i tried that but it was the same exact thing...

Should not matter whether you use the guest account. Did you try clearing out the user account Library/Containers for Safari folders that was suggested in the link? Out of curiosity, if you boot into Safe Mode do you get the same problem?

I can access all three aforementioned websites without issue using Safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.9) running on a Mac mini 2018 with Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6020).

The only Safari extension I am using is Wipr.

iCloud on my Mac is configured to sync Safari bookmarks, keychain, etc. with my iDevices.

For what it's worth, I can access the same sites using the up-to-date versions of three other web browsers (Vivaldi, the Marmaduke ungoogled build of Chromium, and Waterfox Current). Vivaldi has its built-in ad-blocking enabled. The latter two are using the AdGuard extension.

i cleared 3 safari folders from containers, but that didn't help. safe mode behaves the same way too... and apparently there is something preventing me from making another user on my computer. this has been a day of great revelations!..

Try resetting PRAM, see if that helps as far as the creation of new users.

I have the exact same issue after the upgrade to Safari 14. Ebay website showed the error message but eventually worked. So far, the only website that doesn't work with Safari is eshop.macsales.com. When I try to create a new user, I don't receive any error messages, but it will not appear listed, so can't edit it or log in with it. I reset the PRAM but didn't work for me either.

Just curious if you are also running Linux on a ext4 partition of your SSD/HD. Disk utility doesn't allow me to run the first aid tool as it can't amount the APFS partition. I don't know if this could be related. I am going to re-run the Mojave installer and see what happens.

So, I re-ran the Mojave 10.14.6 from a usb drive and it completed without issues and it seems to have resolved both issues. My current applications, settings, licenses, etc. were still there untouched (as expected, I think). The Safari version re-installed was 12.1.2. Then, noticed in the MacOS updates that I had updates to Security Update 2020-04, Safari 13.2 and Safari 14.0, so I went ahead and installed them, except for Safari v14.0. After this update all seems to be working as normal, so I will leave as is until I see a new update for Safari 14.x. Also, Linux Mint which it's installed on the second partition is working fine and nothing was affected there either.

that is amazing - we have identical issues. and no - i'm not running linux. but i am also on mojave.

question for you: what exactly do you mean by "re-ran" mojave. i was considering wiping my computer clean(which is going to take me a ton of time to set everything back up), so there is a simpler way then? what exactly did you do? thanks!

I'd suggest not wiping the computer yet and try to re-run the installer on your current installation. Chances are that it worked for you as well and save some time.

So, this is what I did:

1. Download the Mojave installer to my computer:

2. Create the installer media in the USB drive:

E.g.

Mojave:*
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyUSBVolume

3. Boot using the USB drive (Hold the Option key during the boot immediately after the chime).
4. Choose to install over the same drive. Don't need to open disk utility at all. Just press Next and let it complete.

thank you so much for this! i will try this and report back! so you're not considering re-installing safari 14 now that you have the ability to create users again? :)

I was tempted to update Safari to version 14, but I noticed something that I don't know if it's good or bad. I am using a MacBook Pro 2015 15in which has a discrete AMD GPU and MacOS switch automatically back and forth between the Intel GPU and the AMD. Normally, when using the AMD, the laptop tends to gets warmer. When using Safari 14 I noticed that it switched to the AMD and the temp raised to 55 Celsius from 35 degrees when it's not used. Now, when using Safari 13, it only uses the Intel GPU, so, I guess I could save some battery if continue using this version. But I might update when Apple gives us a new update hoping some of these issues are fixed. But let us know if that works for you in case you decide to update.

Send feedback to Apple.
