I just installed 15.7 and Safari 26, and when I started everything up again I suddenly couldn't interact with the URL field in the compact tab view. The URL text isn't clickable or copyable, and I can't click on the X to close the tab or on any other icons in the URL field. When I switch to normal view everything works as it should.

Has anyone else seen this? Is this due to compact view not being available anymore in Tahoe?

Same problem. Apple, how did you manage to do that?
And strange circles.

Same here (15.7), also can't close tabs by pressing the little x button. Definitely a bug so hopefully it will get fixed soon. I saw they removed the compact tab view entirely on Tahoe 🤬

For now use the following shortcuts: Command + W to close the current tab and Command + L to select the address bar.

That's odd, because for unrelated reasons I've had to get a new machine, and on this one, with 15.6.1 and Safari 26, the tabs work as they should. Are you on Intel or Silicon?
I'm only seeing the issue when I have the tab layout set to compact (my preferred layout). Separate works as expected.

I thought I was going crazy. Safari 26 as a whole feels quite a bit laggy and buggy for me, btw. How on earth could Apple mess up a perfectly good working browser, even on Sequoia? I hope it gets fixed ASAP...

Thank you especially for sharing the ⌘ + L shortcut.

Same problem here on an M4 MacBook Air on Sequoia 15.7 and Safari 26. Cannot interact with the tab bar while using compact layout.

⌘ + L, ⌘ + R, ⌘ + T, ⌘ + W :) It's faster this way, less comfy but I will be using it until macOS 15 is obsolete or Tahoma makes drastic improvements.

I have the same issue but maybe due to abolishing the compact tab on macOS 26? My browser keeps crashing and makes my laptop very hot especially just after updating. You can see how energy was being consumed:

Same here. I thought it was a problem with some extension but no... the only way to regain access to a tab and interact with it is by disabling the compact view!

Same here - laptop, M1, updated to sequioa 15.7 this afternoon and now Safari 26 has unresponsive search fields and other wonky GUI problems.
Same here, Sequoia 15.7 and Safari 26, spinning beach ball after putting one or two characters in the web address field. Basically unusable compared to the previous version. iMac 27 i7 2020. How can this garbage be released?

Edit: Can't even report this properly to Apple, there is no option to report an issue with OS Sequoia 15.7. I had to select a previous version instead.

There was a smallish update for Safari available today (I'm using macOS 15.7); I installed it and the Compact tabs view seems to be working normally again! 🤞🏻(For me, at least.)
Yes, can confirm that Safari 26.0.1 seems to be working fine.

Might be a staggered update. Should arrive sometime today.

Update 26.0.1 (225,8 Mo) proposed this morning (France) in System Settings...
Out of caution, I will wait before applying this “patch”...

It seems that all it does is fix this specific bug, so I don't see why you should wait with this specific update. But rather err on the side of caution, of course.

This is fixed now after installing the Safari 26.0.1 update.

Edit: Oops no. No beach ball, but still slow in the web address field.

If I'm waiting to apply this patch for this unforgivable error, it's because I have less and less confidence in this company! And I admit that this is starting to annoy me deeply (Mac user since 1990)...

but remember, when you update to Tahoe, there is no more compact tabs view...
This goes beyond good and evil.

And all the same strange circles.
