v26.0.1 brought back a functional "compact tab" layout. But it seems to have some bug still.

With a couple of tabs open and Safari running for some time, switching between tabs become sluggish. There is about 2-3 seconds delay.

If I switch to "separate tab" layout, the delay disappears. When switch back to "compact tab" layout, the delay comes back and persists until relaunch of Safari.

i'm getting the delay with compact tabs on macOS 15.7/safari 26.0.1 too. i might have to give up on it, especially since it's still missing in tahoe from what i understand :(

In addition to re-launching Safari, another workaround I found is to use "New Window" over "New Tab". While the old tabs might be boggling down on the bug (most likely memory related), new windows don't inherit the issue.

I submitted a feedback to Apple in late Sept. Let's report the issue to Apple.

While this might temporarily go away when switching from compact tabs to separate tabs, the bug does start happening with separate tabs too:

I can make it happen by doing this: in the current tab where a website is already open, type a letter in the address bar and then backspace it, then do that again and again (e.g. type "m" then backspace, type "m" then backspace, and keep doing it). After doing this just 10 times it starts to slow down, and if you keep doing it Safari will slow to a crawl and start allocating tens of GB of RAM.

I submitted a bug report about it and it was updated to say that there were more than 10 similar recent reports.

Closing Safari and reopening it fixes it temporarily, until you do enough typing in the address bar, then it happens again.

Observed the same in the past week or two. My temporary workaround is using "new window" instead of "new tab". In some discussions, people refer the issue as "Safari caching bug".

Thanks for sending feedback to Apple and letting us know. More people should do so to give Apple encouragement on fixing the issue.
