I think that web browsers are the main tool most people use on a computer
Yes, but you don't have to make a choice. Just use whichever browser is most appropriate for the task at hand.

I have one mac and use many pc's. For me i like consistency so firefox is my choice on all computers.
Safari for Windows has been available for quite some time. I have Windows-using colleagues who use Safari as a security measure.

Safari 4

3.2 began crashing at strange times. Went through all steps until I ran into a couple unrelated problems and did a clean sweep of the drive and reinstalled everything...3.2 still crashed. Moved to 4 and only one crash due to a bad script.

Safari 4 feels as if it's going to crash. Just opening new tabs nearly locks the entire application. I'm going back to 3.

Yeah trying to use Forum Spy and tabs on Safari 4 (12/29/2008) release feels like handling a bomb.

Again, opposite of me. Forum Spy is what was giving me the "Slow Script" warning in the previous build of Safari 4 and the 12/29 update has fixed it. I also usually have 3+ tabs open as well.

Eh, I'll let attribute this to the strange computer ether that nobody will ever understand.

Firefox of course. For adblock plus, scrapbook, and the easy switching of languages in spell check (amongst many other things)
Agreed. Safari is a great browser but IMO it just can't compete against Firefox 3 with these three add-ons:
  • Adblock Plus
  • Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper
  • Flashblock

I use Safari 4 just like Tallest Skil. There's a new update for Safari 4 that was released last December 29th.

I'm using Safari, much better IMO than Firefox and I love the way it renders text and lays out webpages..
I want to install Safari 4, but I have a couple of questions. Will Glims and SafariBlock work with Safari 4? Will I lose all my Bookmarks and passwords? How do I go back to Safari 3, if I need to?
I'm burning to install it, but don't want to until I have a better idea of this...

Thanks..

I am not sure about Glims as I use Inquisitor (which works fine). Also don't use SafariBlock so no help from me there.

Bookmarks are still there, saved passwords will be gone IIRC (I am using 1Password).

There is an uninstaller in the same .dmg that will revert back to 3.

I mainly use Firefox 3, because it has support for bookmark tags. I use it a lot. Also I love the way Firefox searches through my bookmarks if I type something in the address bar.

If Safari had those features I would switch in a heartbeat. It is much lighter and faster... uses less ram. Firefox 3.05 uses 125 mb ram with 1 MR page open, Safari only 30 mb with the same page.

Either your mac has problems, or it's just you. It works much better than FF 3 and Safari 3 in my case.

FF is much accurate. Safari just runs circles around FF any day. I use Forum Spy and have multiple tabs open. FF lags and stutters, but Safari is smooth.

hmmm those are 3rd parties. If I were to compare Safari and FF head-on with no addons or plugins; Safari pwns FF.

You won't lose your bookmarks. I think Glims/SafariBlock will work but not entirely sure. I haven't gotten any popups from normal sites yet. You can always uninstall Safari 4. There's an uninstaller (FF sucks in this area) so you can revert back to 3.

Try typing apple or google or microsoft in the Safari Address bar and hit return. Safari will stick the www and .com in and has done this for as long as I can remember.

Command + return is used to open the address in a new tab.

But firefox does it better. Type a movie title followed by imdb into the address bar and it will go to the relevent imdb page, sweet. Fire fox understands gaps so typing amazon uk into the address bar takes you to the amazon uk page, sweet again. If safari could do this and other things then I would give it a prolonged try, until then its FF for me.

Just installed Safari 4 Build 5526.11.2. Is this the most current one?

I'm happy to say that it all my passwords were kept in place, cookies, bookmarks, Glims, SafariBlock... pretty much everything is set up like before.
So far so good...

What exactly should be different? Visualy, I don't see any changes but it does seem that pages are loading a little faster...

Yes, it is the newest one, release Dec. 29 IIRC.

I have yet to see anything different visually, but I know javascript is massively improved.

I don't think that there is a solution at the moment for syncing Safari with FF. You can ofcourse import bookmarks to either browsers.
While it doesn't sync them automatically, Bookdog (http://www.sheepsystems.com/products/bookdog/) will sync your firefox and safari bookmarks. I do most of my web browsing in Safari on my Macs, but when I'm on my work laptop (Dell), I use Firefox and I like having the same bookmarks arranged exactly the way I'm used to them in Safari.

I keep *all* my bookmarks (firefox and safari) on *all* my computers (mac and PC) synced in the following way: MoblieMe takes care of keeping Safari bookmarks synced across my macs. I manually use Bookdog to sync Safari to Firefox. And Foxmarks takes care of syncing my Firefox bookmarks on mac and PC. Yeah, it's sounds like a convoluted route to keeping Firefox and Safari synced on multiple computers, but it's not labor intensive and it works perfectly. It literally takes less than 20 seconds to launch Bookdog, click the "do it" button and boom! it's done.
