Hopefully I will explain this clearly enough.

In ML & Safari 6 then "Back or Previous Page" button is greyed out. To return to the previous page I have to go to History and select that page. Then if I hit the back button it will take me back to the greyed out page again.

Why? Do I not have something checked?

You explained the issue just fine. :)

The fwd/back buttons only work if you click a link and go to another site within the same tab. If you open a site in a new tab there will be no fwd/back (it will be greyed out). So fwd/back is not really linked to ther entire history, just the history within a given tab.

Are you sure? Seems like when I finish this reply and want to go back to the forum I just hit the back arrow.

Yep, that worked as advertised. Just a few extra screens cause I replied.
