Does anyone else using Lion experience Safari freezes and crashes when watching HTML5 YouTube videos? My MacBook Pro's fans start revving up and I have to force quit Safari. Apple have updates Safari a few times since I started experiencing this and non of the updates have fixed anything. Chrome and Firefox can handle HTML5 videos just fine... What is up???

Glitches indeed

It's hit or miss with me, but recently safari has not been playing nice with HTML5 youtube videos. I've been in the HTML5 youtube testing program for some time, but it seems only recently that youtube's been pushing out the HTML5 version of their videos whenever possible. 50% of the time they freeze up safari while loading, or stop playing halfway through a video even though it's fully loaded.

I've tried the same videos with chrome, they load in flash and work just fine. I'm running OS X 10.7.3.

I had problems with the HTML5 beta also. What I did was go back to YouTube and exit the beta, then install this extension. It forces YouTube to show HTML5 vids both on YouTube itself and YouTube vids embedded on other sites.

I have not had any crashes but I have problems with videos playing sounds/pictures out of sync, or rather sound seem to rather OK but the video sometimes turn into a slideshow instead and I also have the problem with videos that stop playing by some strange reason.

I think all this began with the latest Safari upgrade (5.1.4). This problem seem to be a Safari problem since these problems doesn't show up in chrome.

Is there any way to block HTML5 from loading in youtube? Youtube keeps randomly using HTML5 videos and ever since the last safari update they barely function. Safari freezes up for around a minute, the video plays the first couple of seconds then restarts multiple times, you can't use the timeline in the video without it going crazy, or it will just stop loading. The only fix is probably to block HTML5.

youtube.com/html5

choose LEAVE HTML5 Trial. ;)

Yep HTML5 video on my macpro performance is terrible too.

I used HTML5 YouTube as I am an opponent of Flash Player due to it's insecurities and CPU usage, but more than 50% of the time videos did not play, or they were not made available in that format. I quit using it and went back to Flash Player for now. Hopefully this feature will be more functional in the future.

I find that Safari crashes for me when I hit the ESC key to come out of full screen mode, or resume from a sleep/screen saver (which kicks in after an hour of no usage). I have the "Click2Flash" extension installed so I get mp4 video instead of Flash, this problem only started when I upgraded to Safari v6, I had the old v5x from Snow Leopard when I upgraded to Lion and it never crashed like this.

I know about the opting out of the HTML5 beta in YouTube issue, all that does is stop the videos from playing in HTML5 and forces them to Flash. The crashing issue on the other hand I think could be my computer as it's a old: late 2007 White MacBook, Core 2 Duo and 4GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM.
