Is there a way to set Safari to update threads more often then 30 mins?

Try this. But be careful about setting it too low...if a lot of people do it, it can cause huge server loads.

I just deduced that you need to edit that field in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Syndication.plist by modifying the interval and seeing what changed.

So, of course, you could also open that file and edit it in Property List Editor, but the command line approach is much easier.

And, yes, please keep the refresh interval reasonably large.
